Insulation - 2 layers better than 1?

Has anyone gone for 2 layers of insulation rather than 1. I can get 2 x R3 to cover the ceiling for the same price as R5. In theory this would seem to work out to R6, but more work installing! Just wondering if anyone else has gone down this path?
2 layers is better than one especially if the second layer is laid perpendicular to the first

The installation cost would probably have you, what is the price difference for the materials?
The OP said it was same price

Material cost is the same, for R5 or 2 lots of R3. Hubby is doing the installation, new house so should be fairly neat and clean, only 2 downlights to worry about, large area but doesn't seem overly difficult.
Hello. When we inspect a ceiling before install we look at the condition of the ceiling cavity and the condition of the pre-existing insulation. It most cases you can lay batts over the top but you want to minimise the gaps as much as possible. We also look at the option of removal and reinstall. Where are you based? Feel free to call us on 03 9753 3811 if you have any questions that one of "Insulation Specialists" can answer for you.

Thanks, we're in Adelaide, it's a new house. All sorted now, my husband is halfway through installing the batts.

Bigger the better for storage for me IMO. But I guess it's harder to tell the cost/benefit in your example - mainly the 'cost'? If you go 700mm, what are you doing extra…
