Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 May 20, 2023 3:49 pm Hi HomeOne, I'm in the midst of landscaping a cat run down the side of my house, and the recent rains have me wondering if I need to install some sort of drainage. I've excavated a fair amount of clay soil from the area, and will soon be replacing it with sandy loam, ensuring a slope away from the house as per regulations. Prior to bringing in the sandy loam, I'm noticing a lot of pooling on top of the existing clay. I'm wondering whether to install a strip drain (like in the second attached photo) alongside the edging, or if putting some agi pipe along the same run would be a suitable alternative? As the current soil is clay, I'm not surprised the water is pooling on top, therefore a strip drain would be suitable - but once I put in the sandy loam, the soil conditions may change to the point where I'm not so much trying to drain surface water as I am trying to drain subsurface moisture. Or - am I worrying too much - will I not need any drainage at all? I'd welcome any opinions as I'm at a bit of a loss other than to just chuck in the sandy loam and see how the water sits - except if I do that, I then have to excavate part of it again to install the drainage!
