Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Aug 31, 2011 4:16 pm Hi i had some 20 or so pittosporums planted a couple of years ago by a landscaper. along my fenceline and are now just over the top of the fence. As they have grown taller they have constantly started to lean towards the ground. I have tried staking them, but unfortunately that hasnt stopped them from leaning over again and now im getting frustrated. Im thinking it could be due to the ground remaining to wet as i get alot of surface water when it rains? The landscaper hasnt put them into the ground far enough? Maybe they need to replanted? Not enough soil or bad soil? weak roots I have had Pittosporums before but at my old house and they never did this. Anyone else had this issue with their shrubs and if so what have they done? So any feedback suggestions would be great. Re: pittosporums leaning over help 2Sep 01, 2011 12:28 am Staking only encourages this. Weak roots and too much nitrogen & water. They will get tall and leggy with no strength to them. These won't be able to be replanted after that long. Unfortunately just because a landscaper did it doesn't mean its been done well or correctly. Don't fertilise at all. This will worsen the situation. Buy a heap of certified organic compost and fill around the base of the root ball if it is out of the ground. Cut the plants back nearly by a half, this is quite hard, if you want to play it safe, cut them back a third. Add zeolite to the soil before mulching. (There is threads on zeolite) Mulch, mulch, mulch and mulch. This is what will change things. Yes mulch. Mulch is the very thing that sustains a garden. raw uncomposted tree lopper prunings. There are no alternatives to this. Anything else is a compromise on fixing this. You source that via your local tree lopper or better still, your local arborist. 10cm thick. Seasol and molasses.
