Browse Forums DIY, Home Maintenance & Repair 1 Feb 03, 2007 11:36 am I repainted the ceiling about a year ago. Now large spots of the paint work are blistering/cracking/peeling away from plater board ceiling - bring with it the original plater board coating. I suspect this is due to penetration of rain water during recent heavy downpours. I intend to sand back/scape away the peeling paint but I am uncertain how to best layer the re-paint to limit the appearance of patching. Also what is the best under-coat to use. Suggestions would be helpful. Thanks. Re: Re-Painting bedroom ceiling 2Feb 03, 2007 3:15 pm I had the blistering of paint as well in my daughters room, it was from her burning candles and oils, somehow it affected the ceiling….scary thought!
We did a reno a few years ago and had the house repainted, the painter didn’t do too flash a job on her ceiling, its still quite obvious. Although I did choose to use semi gloss on the ceilings and cornice, this texture paint will always show imperfections. Your undercoat is probably not the important thing here, having said that, you should always use a good quality paint if you want a good paint job. Your prep is the most important thing. Keep filling and sanding until you get a smooth surface. Then possibly give that section a couple of hits with the undercoat with more sanding if necessary. Use a flat ceiling paint as it will help to hide the finished result if it isn’t up too what you hoped. Unfortunately…. damage is damage, you can only do your best, take your time with it, don’t do a finally paint until you think you have achieved a good preparation. Turns out the Aircon on the roof above had at one stage leaked through the roof & they just repainted the stain. Now... a few years down the track this painted area is all flaking off in big pieces. We've had a painter & plasterer look at it & they've said the Gyprock is so damaged from the water that the entire ceiling has to be replaced. The quick fix of just scraping back & repainting, would just flake again not to far down the track. I'd deffinately recommend getting the state of the ceiling looked at before you just repaint. Thank you @ashington Homes for your reply! They just got back to me and offered credit for me to just take it as is.
