Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Apr 09, 2015 6:09 pm Hey guys! It's been a very long time since I last posted here. I have a question. I am installing a very basic outdoor kitchen with a sink and gas cooktop in the alfresco (nothing fancy). My query is, can I use a typical indoor cooktop (4 burner, Blanco, Westinghouse, etc. WITH flame failure) outdoors? The reason I ask is because I have spoken to a few gas fitters and get conflicted answers and I am unsure where else to ask. I have asked Alinta, Harvey Norman, etc. and no one seems to know. Some gas fitters have said there is no problem as long as there is the flame failure feature. Others have said they can only install it if all 4 sides of the alfresco is "enclosed", whatever that means. My alfresco is in the back corner of the house, rectangular in shape, with two open sides. Kitchen will be against brick wall. I'm in WA for all those playing. Any help would be much appreciated and hopefully may help someone else who may be in my situation. Cheers! Assume as long as you are covered it should be ok otherwise the holes get filled with water... Re: Indoor cooktop for outdoor kitchen? 5Apr 10, 2015 10:45 pm Look into Goldstein Cooktops or ranges. They are commercial and come with flame failure etc and will deliver thermally stable cooking. The price is about the same as an good quality induction. The standard burner are 28Mj. They are fine for alfresco as a number of people have them and they can take a beating as they are commercial. Re: Indoor cooktop for outdoor kitchen? 6Apr 11, 2015 3:50 pm Thanks to everyone who replied. Reasons for not wanting anything else: - Budget: Commercial cooktops as in the Goldstein are very, very expensive and not suitable for my requirements ($500 vs upwards of $5000). However, this may suit someone else so good recommendation. - Gas vs Electric: Again, budget comes into play here. A good induction cooktop plus possibly getting another set of cookware would be upwards of $1500. Ceramic is a no no. And from my research and various recommendations from friends who have induction, it's not *that* great for woks. Plus gas is cheaper. BUT again induction is still a good cooktop for those that suits their requirements. All I want is a simple gas cooktop as that is sufficient for my needs (flame failure feature being a requirement). To answer my own original post, I had to contact the dept of commerce. The simple (and vague) answer is you can only install an indoor gas appliance outside IF it complies to the certain conditions enforced. Indoor appliance An indoor gas appliance is designed for indoor installation; it may be installed externally in a quasi-outdoor situation. Quasi-outdoor—An outdoor area sufficiently weatherproofed to allow the installation of an appliance certified for indoors without affecting its safety, combustion or integrity. I hope the information helped, and is intended as a guide only. Please contact the dept of commerce in your state to ensure that you receive the correct information regarding installation. From what I was told, the area would need to be inspected to deem it as Quasi-outdoor or not. Therefore, it is not a simple yes or no answer. Cheers!
