We are pretty getting close to lockup, and need to sort out our pantry fitout. Our pantry is a large walk-in, 2910 x 1540. There is a sliding door on one of the long walls for entry from the kitchen. We were thinking of using Ikea's kitchen cabinets to fit the pantry out. The proposal is for a benchtop to wrap around the three walls (excludes the wall with the doorway), and install open cabinets under one long side, and one short side. The other short end would have nothing underneath so we can make it a nook with stool under it (that wall will have our wifi & cordless phone base, so it can be our "admin spot"). We'll use the benchtop for all our appliances (blender, toaster, kettle, etc), leaving only the coffee machine in theh kitchen. The cabinets will be left open (no doors), and we'll install wire baskets in there. At a later stage, well get some custom shelving made for all my wife's Tupperware. Has anyone seen the Ikea kitchen cabinets used in such a manner? Anyone have any views on this? Our kitchen is quite high level (shaker style painted doors with 40mm stone), but I find it hard to justify another $5K on pantry fitout. The Ikea price including tops, cabinets, drawers, legs & plinths is about $1,300. Any feedback would be appreciated Gus Re: Ikea Faktum Cabinets in Walk-In Pantry 2Jul 17, 2008 5:43 pm Maisie Hi Folks We are pretty getting close to lockup, and need to sort out our pantry fitout. I think for a dry room they would be ok, but they are not waterproof and I also found that the edging strips have fallen off from the inner cupboard shelves.
My uncle who is a kitchen designer was really surprised when took a look, he said that they are not compliant with australian standards. Re: Ikea Faktum Cabinets in Walk-In Pantry 6Jul 17, 2008 8:57 pm I don't think a pantry fit out would be $5k - was this quote from your builder??
They mark everything up. Get a cabinet maker to give you a quote first before forking out $1300 on Ikea. Kevin Brown gave you a guide, get a quote for the lot with installation Paula Re: Ikea Faktum Cabinets in Walk-In Pantry 7Jul 18, 2008 11:01 am You'd be surprised at what cabinet makers are charging - hence the increase in availability of flat-packs. We're building a custom house and we know the builder's mark-up.
FWIW, the numbers quoted above are not dissimilar to Ikea's. Perhaps Kevin can give an indication of what sort of percentage flat-packs are of a bespoke cabinet's cost as a guide. The good thing about Ikea is the "modular" aspect of the product. You can choose drawers, baskets, shelves, whatever you want. With Ikea, if you change your mind, drive out to Osborne Park and get a refund (if still in packaging), or a credit (if assembled). I've built two previous kitchens with their product and had only one issue (one of those spinning corner cabinet shelves broke) - warranty replacement. My questions was more about the aethetic of such a look in a pantry. The negatives of a flat pack will be: - pre-drilled holes for hinges will be visible (but probably hidden once drawers and baskets go in); - joins in top; - double vertical cabinet sides (due to individual carcuses butting up against each other) rather than a single divider. Positives: - cost - self installation possible - not dealing with yet another trade! Thanks for the comments so far Re: Ikea Faktum Cabinets in Walk-In Pantry 8Jul 18, 2008 12:07 pm Maisie The good thing about Ikea is the "modular" aspect of the product. On the refund it's only valid for three months from purchase (I'm reading from the receipt in my wallet). I'm doing a WIR refit and I've bought some extra bits and pieces "just in case" - but getting cracking on the job so that I can return stuff if I want. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Ikea Faktum Cabinets in Walk-In Pantry 9Jul 18, 2008 12:50 pm Maisie FWIW, the numbers quoted above are not dissimilar to Ikea's. To clarify my prices I gave before, Any cupboard you require is charged at the next size up on the price list. These cupboards are not cut down from off-the-shelf items, but are made especially for you at whatever size you require, for no extra charge So if you want a 534mm wide base cupboard the price will be $118, including adjustable feet and all assembly fittings. I think most trades people think we are forking it in on the boom, which is not the case.
Choosing the right stuff is very personal, I think your main point to consider would be who is going to see your pantry and whether it would annoy you to see the negatives as you listed them. I think most flat pack cabinets have those holes and double sides. As for joins in the top, you could always pay and additional $320 to have the mitre joined by a trades person. I would go for the cheapest and most functional in the pantry, baskets and open shelving as you can see what is where but this is me. Cheers Maggie Do you really want to accommodate the window?
