Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Feb 15, 2012 12:52 pm Hi, We are in the planning stages of our new kitchen. We are happy with the current layout of our old kitchen except for a few minor changes. We currently have a 600mm freestanding oven with cabinets either side, the cabinet on the right is 300mm wide which is right next to a door. Our idea was to get rid of the 300mm cabinet and have a new 900mm freestanding oven in it's place. I have attached a basic ikea kitchen planner photo showing what I mean (bottom middle). Someone has told me however that you can't do this for safety reasons. I would have thought you could buy new ovens that do not emit heat on the side of the oven? http://www.flickr.com/photos/76658811@N02/6878809055/ Re: Do you need cabinets either side of freestanding oven/st 2Feb 16, 2012 1:33 am My Mum & Dad have exactly that layout with their kitchen. They've got a 600mm freestanding stove right next to a door way. It's an old 70's house and was built that way (I grew up there) but the stove was only just replaced last year and it wasn't a problem. You do have to be careful though if you have children, not so much with the side wall of the oven as it doesn't get hot enough to burn you, but if you're cooking with pots on top of the stove, you need to be careful that the handles aren't hanging over the edge of the stove in the doorway and a kid doesn't run through the door way and knock it off. My Mums really paranoid about that when she has the grand kids over. Luckily the doorway leads into the formal lounge which isn't used that much so it isn't a main thoroughfare. It looks as if you have an opportunity to rejig your corner cabinet. It looks like you have a 900x900 corner cabinet next to the oven, however if you were to have instead a blind corner cabinet positioned with it's long side against the wall with the sink/window, and position the oven up against it (allowing about 50mm of filler so the oven door can open etc) - you ought to have 200-250mm play on the side where the doorway is. If you wanted you could then put a slim cupboard (for oven trays etc) between the oven and the doorway. This should give you just enough space to have pot handles don't protrude into the doorway. Thanks mate. Yeah good points! Leaning towards Option 3 to get a bit extra space in the cabinets but not going too crazy high (and expensive).
