Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Aug 02, 2006 9:22 pm I am going to be tiling the benchtops in the kitchen. I have the tiles and adhesive already but I wanted to check if there is any special preperation I need to do before sticking them to the bench.
Will I need to use Ceramic Tile Underlay sheets? Will I need special grout? Will I need to waterproof the existing bench? I have done a lor of other tiling work around the house and have no problem with laying the tiles I am juts concerned that it might need more preperation work. Any help would be great. Brett Re: Tiling kitchen benchtops 2Aug 02, 2006 10:09 pm If you are tiling over an existing laminate top you may need to roughen up the surface to provide a 'key' for the tile adhesive to bond to.
You won't need to put tile underlay down unless the existing benchtop is severely damaged (read missing great hunks! ). An epoxy grout will provide a more hygenic solution than ordinary grout. Re: Tiling kitchen benchtops 4Aug 05, 2006 9:42 pm I would possibly use silicon instaed of grout for the cleaning factor. Spill some pasta sauce on grout and the stain will be impossible to get out. Re: Tiling kitchen benchtops 6Oct 17, 2006 9:46 pm hey guys, i'm a tiler. my suggestion would be to to put a lining on top of your bench top, main reason being if you put 6 mm villaboard down and screw it off at 200, you will end up with a very strong base for your tiles. I f you just roughen your existing laminate, what glue are you going to use? Two part flexible which will do the trick but definatley not 1 part flexible that you mix with water, i wouldn't trust it on laminate even if you did roughen it up. the other thing is, what condition is your laminate in, how old is the kitchen, has the laminate glue started to deterioate, maybe not, you would actually have to pull it off to know for sure. so tom minimize your risk, sheet your bench top first and screw it off very well, it will be as solid as a rock and then also, on villa you could use a variety of glues that would be guaranteed. Also what were you thinking of doing on the edges?? Keep in mind that pots and pans often hit edges of kitchen benches and tiles especially what type of tiles can chip easily, and you dont want to have to change tiles to regularly. And lastly use epoxy grout, it's used in comercial kitchens, hospitals etc. Very good for sanitation, bit of a pain using it especially if you've never used it before, but not impossible, just dont mix it too wet, otherwise the joints will never dry, and the surface depending on how much you've left behind will dry much much quicker, and in turn be harder to clean, and at the same time when cleaning the sponge will empty the joints, so mix it a bit more on the thicker side and dont leave too much behind when grouting. listen to robert kiyosaki's "rich dad poor dad" great listen or read for potential investors or current wealth creators Hi, I'm clearing the tiles from our horrid 50 year old bathroom and preparing to lay new ones.
