Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Aug 21, 2008 7:50 pm We went to our new place today to try some sample pot colours on the walls, and we're sort of undecided but do have a bit more of an idea...
We tried Light Rice Half (can't remember which brand this is, possibly Dulux), but found it sort of...yellow-toned... We tried Dulux Suede Effects in Fossil Beige but found it SO orange/red/apricot in hue. We want more of a toned down version...we're thinking now of trying out either French Pebble or the Mushroom one. Does anyone have any opinion of them? Does anyone else find Fossil Beige is really, really apricot-y??? We also tried Taubmans Portland Stone and we THINK we quite like it...but we're not sure. We just put one thin coat on...obviously there'll need to be 2 coats done. In general, does the 2nd coat make the overall colour DARKER or just more uniform? We don't want any darker than what's already on there with just one thin coat. Does anyone have any opinion on Portland Stone as a shade? (I can't find anything on the Taubmans website to show you, sorry!) Thank you! How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 2Aug 21, 2008 8:07 pm Portland Stone is a Dulux colour also and very similar to Light Rice.....
I love both these colours and the Warm Neutral is very much the same tone. I always find the 2nd coat makes the colour even all over. I haven't really seen the other colours to comment but the above mentioned ones I just looovve. Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 3Aug 21, 2008 8:10 pm Oh good, that's reassuring to know someone else likes those colours! lol. I was sort of scared someone might go "BLEGH! THOSE colours!? Are you BLIND!?" lol How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 4Aug 21, 2008 8:30 pm Grace, I tend to stay away from any of the effects paints. They tend to date to fast.
I really don’t like suede effects, it’s very hard to patch when it gets marked. I also don’t work with Taubmans any more I find them to difficult, as you have found with their website, you can’t access colours off their site, hopefully they will amend that soon! Two coats will make the colour slightly darker when it dries, but yes, also gives a better coverage. When doing samples on the walls NEVER just do 1coat, you should always do 2, this will give you the exact colour. Also it depends what colour you are painting over on the walls, if the old colour is similar to what you are painting new, you should be able to get away with 1 coat, if it is nothing like your colour you need to do 2 sometimes 3 coats to get a good coverage. I really don’t. The wall also hopefully won’t acquire any marks anyway, because it’s just the one wall behind the main bed suite, and so people won’t be touching it or bumping it or anything like that.
Ok, when we go back on the weekend we’ll add another coat to the colour we did…it’s just that it says to wait 2 hours between coats, and we simply didn’t have 2 hours to hang around! The old colour is a very pale shade…it’s white with a dash of pinkness in it. The new colour is somewhat darker. (Portland Stone for instance) Is it ok to take the sample pot or the colour chip card or just have the name and get Dulux to do it? (this is for the painter I mean, since we’re not painting ourselves). Apparently Dulux do have a Portland Stone colour as well, but I’ve never noticed it in my travels so would fear it’s a different colour to the one I want. How the hell did I become a senior member!? No thanks. I only want the one wall. We don’t want to overdo it! (and yes, I am aware I’m somehow now a silver member. I just haven’t been bothered changing my signature thing) How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing! Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 9Aug 22, 2008 2:18 pm Mikaela_D My mum did a dusky red suede effects feature wall in her bedroom behind the bedhead about 5 years ago and it still looks great, hasn't dated yet. Problem is the previous owners didn't understand that "feature" generally means one, maybe a couple of feature colors, not five different ones.... there's actually a suede effect feature around the kitchen that works well which we will probably keep. mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 10Aug 22, 2008 2:55 pm I know this isn't quite the same but it seems a good spot to express how things go out of date......We are in a rental at the moment and my sons Nursery is.....wait for it.....................................................................white with.........

I remember it fondly..........I think this was from the era when I was wearing fingerless gloves in winter.............that to was a good look.................Now I understand.........its all coming back to me..............
splatter paint was cool for 5 minutes just like my fingerless gloves made my hands cool within...........5 minutes. Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 13Aug 22, 2008 7:23 pm Hey my toilet was painted with the same effect!!!!! white with green splatter. I think it had a blue ceiling! It was really bad to look at at the end of a drinking session!!
The bathroom was bright yellow with a blue ceiling. The person before me was going for a tuscan feel apparently I'll see if i can find pics. I got to admit. I have knitted fingerless gloves. When i was on the tools, the winter down here killed me. Kept my hands nice and toasty Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 14Aug 22, 2008 9:12 pm In the house we just sold all of our walls were light rice with a grey suede effects wall in the lounge room. The light rice was a nice neutral colour but it was a teensy bit more yellow than I would have liked. As for the seude effects wall I tired of it very quickly - but don't let that stop you, you're obviously the one who has to look at it, and I don't think the wall looked outdated - I just got sick of it and wanted something a little more neutral. Re: What do you think of these paint colours? 15Aug 23, 2008 6:14 pm We tried a sample of Cocoa Parfait today, and at first we loved it, but then once the first coat dried a bit, it was way too dark. Ugh. Back to Portland Stone. (we went to Mitre 10 today to get another sample pot of suede effects in French Pebble, and we tried to find the colour card thing for Portland Stone, but it didn't seem to exist. Now we're concerned any painter we hire won't be able to get it!!!)
Anyway, French Pebble suede effect was great. We've at least decided on that one for the feature wall, anyway. lol *making decisions is like pulling teeth for me* How the hell did I become a senior member!? I know nothing!
