Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jan 25, 2011 6:24 pm I'll try and be brief...try... 1. before the contract was signed I was out getting quotes on bamboo flooring, I confirmed with the designer of the house (who was our contact) that I could have the skirting laid after the floors were laid. Pitty this was done verbally. 2. Contract gets signed, I ask at what stage I should organise for the floors to go it. I get the reply that they can't let us put our floors down prior to handover incase they scratch them - they will not allow it. So I ask can you come back after the floors are laid and finish of the skirting - no we cannot, it must be completed before handover. 3. After many discussions (with the 1st site supervisor, designer and floor ppl) I sign a variation that the skirting is only to be tacked on (and painted) in the areas the bamboo floor is being laid. 4. onsite I meet the chippy he tells me it's best to install the skirting correctly but at the height of bamboo flooring, I just needed to supply a sample, the site supervisor agrees. I supply the sample. 5. Due to payment issues the first chippy walks off the job (yep we have great builders...NOT!). The new chippy says he won't do it that way because once the skirting is painted and fixed we risk ripping the paint if any of the heights are wrong so he's just going to tack it on at floor level. I said I had spoken to the site supervisor and this was not the way it was going to be done. He did it his way anyway 6. Up to site supervisor number 4 now (1st one resigned, 2nd one was fired, 3rd one fobbed us off to the 4th one). Now he's trying to tell me they can't paint it, he tried explaining it to me on the phone but I was to fired up to make sense of it so he's agreed to meet me onsite to discuss the skirting and go over the other 30+ items I want answers on. So my question is, because I've signed the variation is that what has to stick - being they have to paint it, but they don't have to move it to the height I want it as that isn't mentioned in the variation? or can I demand it be raised to the flooring height? geez I hope that makes sense. I just want some advise to help me on Thursday. thanks for taking the time to read my rant and respond. Unfortunately you can't make them do anything that isn't in writing in the variation. He can choose to do it but you can't force him to as that's not was legally agreed on in writing. So they tacked it, now they have to paint it. From my experience, the "tack and paint" should be OK since it's not hard at all to take the skirtings off before bamboo installation. The only problem is if your skirtings are less than 18mm thick because they can break more easily. The other issue is putting them back on - but this is typically done by the floor installer. You might also want to lightly sand and paint them before putting them back on My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: Skirting - what are my rights 6Jan 25, 2011 8:23 pm thanks so much for the replies. We have had so many things go wrong with this build, I'm getting very emotional about it all and want to go in Thursday with a clear head. While I would like it raised, I'm not going to be an ar$e about it if they don't 'have' to do it. cheers again our dream home in the hands of a nightmare builder Cheers for your help The only thing to add to these comments is that where possible it's always good to try and work with people than just say "no" because you can.
