How much did your electrical cost?

Hi All

We had our electrical appointment today and I need some feedback.

Our electrical quote has come back at $8000.00 just for wiring and installation. This does not include the cost of lightfittings.

This is for a double story 4 bedroom home.

Any feedback appreciated.
Really depends on how many GPO and light points you have around the house. So if you wanna comparison, possibly break that 8000 down a bit. Our electrical didn't work out to be as much, but we didn't install a great deal of GPO's and light points.
Yep - I'd agree - info that would help as a comparison would be the per item cost (eg double GPO $50) and how many.

I think for a double storey house we're looking at around $5k + light fittings
If your builder is using Clipsal, you can get pricing:)

On their website you can request a free copy of their eCatalogue. It has all the priceing retail and trade for every single thing they sell.

I got one, istalled their program and it's fantastic!:) It even includes GST and NON GST prices, as well as a split between trade and retail. After ordering it, took a week to get the CD.

It does depend what your getting done exactly...
We also built double storey 4 bedroom home and our builders electrical costs in at $3200 including extra items we added. Pre-wiring theatre, telephone, foxtel , electrical fittings and installation was organised by our contractor which cost us an additional 4000 so all up on Electrical we spent about $7200 and that includes internal and external fittings. So i'd say your qote is expensive, but like i said depends what you're getting done.
wow $8000, is that with feature lighting or standard? Mine was about $4000 for a single house with 4 bedroom, study, rumpus and cinema room. They wired the whole house and fitted it with cheap light globes. We spent another $2000 on feature lighting.
Hi All
It's to install:

35 downlights
18 'normal' lights
36 light points

2 phone ponts, 6 double light switches, and a few other bits and pieces.

I think we need to get rid of some downlights!!
I hope you don't mind me hijacking the thread a little.

We will have our gallery, electrical etc appointment soon, so was wondering what's the most economical strategy to get the energy saving downlights installed.

Do we get the builder to provision all the switches and downlights? and then buy the fittings etc after handover and get a sparky to install it?

or just get the builder to add power points and don't worry about provisioning for the downlights and featured lighting and get a sparky to install everything?

thanks
Melton - I'd say it would be all your downlights - most builders charge about $100 for a d/l ($50 for the light point, $50 for the light).

Sireza - if your house is single storey - cheapest way is to get the builder to put a batten light in the spot you want the downlight - switch on the wall (and dimmer if necessary) - then get your own sparky to install later.

If it's double storey - most of us a getting ground floor done by the builder and upstairs done separately after hand over.
that's expensive i think... but i guess it's probably because you're getting the downlights installed by the builder and 39 of them... their expensive thru builders.

As stonecutte1309 mentioned, it is cheper to get the builder to install the light battens where you want your downlights to go and install the downlights by your own electrician after handover, that's what we done... and with upstairs, if double storey, electrician can get into the roofspace and install the downlights... works out alot cheaper, that's how we did it...

we got the following thru our builder and the cost of this was $3200

39 no. additional fixed lights with batten holder for future installation of downlights downstairs
4 additional wall light points
12 external junction boxes
1 double weatherproof power point
6 double internal power points
T.V point with 7 metres of extra cable left in the roof for future connection 4 no. two way switches
1 single powerepoint on separate circuit

As mentioned previously, we spent about $4000 more (non-builder costs) on purchase of downlight fittings, other light fitting and installation by our electrician, this also included pre-wiring of telephone, foxtel and theatre room while building.

Can i ask what is Junction Box?

haha... that was my question when my husband requested it...

its basically wiring for future light to be installed to an external wall... a bit like the internal batten holder but for external areas without the light globe. So we placed one in every spot we wanted to install an external light eg: our balcony pillars, one on each pillar, side of the house for future sensor light, etc...

hope i've explained it ok..
Thanks for the explanation..
With regards to the Junction box, is that what you would need for garden lighting?

Also, you mentioned that you used the junction box for future lights which you will put on your pillar. Would it be easier to just get the builder to put a light point there, so you can have a switch in the house, or is that too expensive?

thanks.

To answer the original question, I think for all the downlights, it would work out to be about right. Like stonecutter said, every downlight you want extra is $100, $50 if you are putting it inlieu of a batten light.
wonderland - a junction box comes with a light switch. Yes - you can use those for garden lighting. We'll be having some JBs at ground level for that purpose.

You can't just have a light point because it's outdoors.

As for fitting downlights - you can purchase the fitting for about $10-15 - so if you can get a sparky to install each for less than $35 - it's cheaper to organise yourself.
