Can I install sarking on the inside of an existing roof?

Hi all, I am new to this forum and looking for some advice.

I have a 30 year old house with a pitched, tiled roof. It has no sarking under the tiles and as part of improving insulation I am thinking of installing sarking under the rafters, without removing the tiles.

Will this work and are there any pitfalls to installing sarking this way?

Not 100% sure, but my understanding is it cannot be retro fitted as it has to go underneath the battens or something. Someone will know a lot more than me though.

It can be done.

But more imporantly - what uis the existing ceiling insulation like.
You will get a much greater benefit from enhancing the level of bulk insulation than installing sisalation.

Depends on your purpose for it. Great for keeping out for summer heat. Not that much good for keep in winter warmth.

I am also looking at ceiling batts or loose insulation, as there is practically no insulation there now at all.

I was just considering adding the sarking to further increase the R value.

Reflective Foil laminate (RFL) does not have an R value. This is a manufacturer's fiction. They work completely different from bulk insulation. Most temperate climates need both foil and batts but the effects are not 'additive' in the way you think they are.

You can retrofit RFL as seen on the link I provided. Manufacturer's sites give recommendations on this. The fiddliest thing is to retrofit wall cavity insulation.

May I ask what climate you live in and what is the main problem that you are experiencing e.g. heating or cooling.

Hi, your links no longer work. I live in Perth and my issue is that the loft space is incredibly dirty due to lack of sarking. I have a tiled roof on wooden frame. I don't want to spend 10+ removing the roof to lay it down (I recently got it cleaned and repointed). Can I fit anything inside the loft space to keep the dirt out while providing insulation and without lifting the roof? Im anxious about moisture if the tiles leak a little etc

You can install foil board to underside of rafters, It has better R value than just foil

I have a 2 year old house with colorbond roof. When I moved in I thought summer will be hot and thought of installing an inline fan system. I have the standard anticon, batts and 2 whirlys. After 2 summers it is a relief that my house is cool and rarely I used the a/c. Anyways, I would have installed an inline system if not, where hot air in roof cavity is expelled out. This is just my own thoughts ahd have not asked any experts.
