I prefer the first plan. It's simpler and I feel like the second plan doesn't add much more. Only thing I'd recommend is to extend the dining area a bit more. Oh I should add that this is a tiny (size of a unit) 1979 brown brick house on concrete stumps an hour south of Melbourne.
