It looks to me like a vertical join has let go. This join should not be there. Whoever hung the sheet used a cut and fold method to do the obtuse internal. did not use full sheets. The only thing to do is nail the join back if it is on a stud. Strip the tape out of the joint clean all the loose bits...

You got a bad job there. Use a spade to get it off and a square mouth shovel to pick it up into a wheel barrow. You cant do better than that.
