North facing as in your garage will be facing it or your living area out back? The front will is facing North, Well its like north-northeast.

I'm a big fan of having the laundry next to the kitchen and especially away from any bedrooms. Just a noise thing to avoid waking up the kids. 1.6 square might be a little small but if you hang the dryer over the washing machine I think you can still fit in a fair sized sink (or maybe a skinny minn...
