all the SIP suppliers tend to claim that their product saves $$ on building cost. However, in reality, you are up against the `novelty penalty' imposed by builders and unexpected costs of special fittings or renders. we had quotes for a custom designed ~180m^2 house with slab on ground - $340K using...

Hi fekish, we have in-slab hydronic heating for a house with slate floors where winters get very chilly (NSW, 1000m altitude). I love it; nothig like sittig on the couch in the evening with gentle warmth wafting up. Yes, response time is slow, but that's not really a problem - switch on in mid-may, ...

Dear Forum, in the process of planning new, custom-design home. Planning on DIY flatpack kitchen to save some money - mainly base cabinets, mostly with drawers (good quality, metal sided). I'd like a country kitchen with timber doors & drawer front and have sufficient woodworking skills to make ...

Dear All, I am after some advise: we are planning THE new house and arguing about showers. The idea is to have as low maintenance as possible, i.e. no glass and no mouldy grout. So Aquapanel (or similar) for wall linings and, preferably, a no-door, walk in shower. My questions: 1) how much space do ...

no, there apears to be a variety of 'skins' for SIPs - OSB, fibre cement, MgO board, steel (aka cool room panels), but I have not seen gyprock; fibro/MgO board would come close & be directly paintable. One reason might be that the `skin' must have a certain amount of strength - my guess would be...

Alan, That depends on the "skins" of the SIPs - those with OSB either side seem to need a plasterboard cover (and an external lining). If the SIP has a metal skin, you'd probably want to cover it with some lining on the inside too; for a fibro/MgO board skin, you could just set the joints ...

there are different types of SIPs. I am currently looking at panels with an MgO (magnesium oxide, the new alternative to fibro) skins and an EPS core from PanEco. sounds good, but I wonder whether anybody has build with this type of material & would be prepared to comment. Interested in all aspe...

no, I mean external roller shutters - that is a layer of insulation (foam) covered by aluminium, slightly curved so that it rolls up in a header box above the window. I want them to keep the heat out in summer, warmth in on winter nights, reduce bush fire risk & improve security when we are away...

Hi, we are planning a new house and would like to have an above ground 'cellar', i.e. a small insulated room. one idea to keep this as cool as possible without electricity is to suck in air at floor level through a pipe which runs in the ground & thus chills the air (permaculture principle). I w...
