We used our Jura fully automatic every day for 9 or 10 years until it up and died on us a few months ago and now the tax refund has come in we'll be replacing it, we'd make at least 8 shots out of it per day. We actually found that it made a better coffee than many places in town and that we were ab...

Have just seen this thread and thought 'yup that's us' so I've taken you up on the invitation and dropping in to day hi. *waves* Hiya. I've not yet read much of this thread but will work my way through it as I can. DH and I have 105 acres near Braidwood NSW, we've had the land for three years and we...

Cheers Ed. So the Low-E on side 3 (which I think is the inner side of the inner pane, please correct if wrong) won't interfere with the solar gain to the slab we are trying to achieve with the windows? Also is your standard window the uPVC? We've seen some pics on the net of PVC windows and haven't ...

Thanks for the replies. Dymo I'm not sure I understand your trims comment re the alu frame (sorry I'm more brain dead than usual tonight as the wee one is cuting three molars atm). Do you mean slipping some insulating material between the metal frame and the brick wall? We are building an insulated ...

I'm going a little insane and in circles trying to make sure I've got the glazing for our new house right and would appreciate some feedback. We are building solar passive and all windows and doors will be double glazed, we are in cold area and zoned as heating for passive design, although summer he...

Onc design can be seen as part of the build tread link in my sig. It's my own design and run past an architect with quals in enviro science. I think we are oriented about 10 degrees east of true north with long axis running east-west. Absolutely no western windows and all windows double glazed - the...

Fully inderstand the pet/carpet comments, we have six furbabies and one toddler (yes we are mad LOL) but with winter temps often in the minuses I just don't see myself being happy getting out of a warm cosy bed and hitting a cold floor. Keeping the four-legs out of the carpeted bedrooms will be the ...

That's interesting Onc, our builder was the one who told us that polishing the slab would require water and good power *shrug* we don't have the good power anyway at this stage and DH has decided he's gone off the idea of a polished slab anyway. I'm not after a thermal benefit as such just wanting t...

Two of the rooms get direct sunlight and are north facing. Hmmm hadn't thought of the tile adhesive being an insulator. Polished concrete will require a lot of water and as we are not on mains and would have to use our precious dam resources we decided against against that, might have to revisit tha...

Hi, we are having tiles for most of our north facing areas but I don't want the bedrooms to be tiled, I'd prefer carpet but realise this is about the worst choice in terms of utilising my slab for the solar passivity I had designed it for so I was considering the option of a floating wooden floor. I...

I'm working on the final placement of appliances etc in my new house's kitchen, it's an L-shaped with an island bench. I'd like to put the cooktop on the island bench, problem being the raked ceiling. At the coener of the room the ceiling is 2700mm and it's 3900mm at the centre. The height where it ...

Through a fortunate case of getting bogged on site one spring afternoon we learned of and made contact with a local architect who we engaged to draw up my design - with a little tweaking. The D/A was submitted late December and around two months later we had approval. During discussions with the arc...

Hi there gabster. I wish we had finished or were near finished building our home ::wornout:: but I'm happy to let you know where we've got to. Firstly, we gave up on the kit home as the last quote we got back for a full build was, to us, very obviously a "go away" figure, we decided that w...

Can anyone point me in the right direction for having my design modelled for its solar passivity? I'd like to have it accurately modelled before we finalise design for costing and manufacture to make sure I've not made any glaring errors. TIA

Hi Barker thanks for your input, it sounds like we are of a similar mind with regards to the final cladding :) we'd be doing stone cladding later for budgetary reasons but hope to be able to do it straight away.
