We are in the process of getting quotes from builders for our new home which we have designed ourselves. As such, we have had drawings done for the builders to price from. I have been hearing some stories recently where builders provide an estimate and will then revise that estimate up once you have...

Has anybody had any history of actually negotiating prices down? The base building costs are one thing, but also on items like downlights which some quote at $80 a point which is way over the odds. I would like to think there is haggle in everything especially when you are spending over $400K but so...

Anybody else doing upside down homes? We are looking for a builder now to price a home we are going to build at University Hill in Bundoora and it will be an upside down house. We will front the state forest and want to take advantage of the outlook.

Try and get them done later. We learnt the hard way what the volume builders charge @ more than $100 per point. We found a local sparkey that does them for $50 a point installed and use him now.

Plain old crushed rock will be fine. Any landscape / garden supplies will have it and it will be inexpensive.

In our HT room we have used a color called Joey on the walls and ceiling. I think it's a British Paints color and it would go nicely with what you have already.

My theatre is 5.2 x 3.8 and I have a 95" screen, but we sit about 0.6m from the back wall. It will come down to viewing distance and projector placement but 100" should be about right. It certainly wont be too small for a room that size.

A suggestion I would make when reviewing contracts with these guys (or any other builder) is check your drawings too. Our contract was as agreed but there were two mistakes on the drawings - one related to the kitchen bench and another relating to the splashback height. We nearly ended up with a spl...
