Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Aug 06, 2017 9:46 pm Hello. My mother in law has recently had some electrics done to her new house, recently purchased and in need of renovation. She has hired someone to install some new power points and to be honest some major flags are waving with this electrician. For starters he's up-selling... selling remotes for old air conditioner units that are in need of replacing, trying to install LED down-lights that we haven't asked for and best of all insisting that we buy his gas hob and range-hood. When refused he decided to leave it in the house for my mother in law to 'think about' and if not wanted he'd pick it up when next here... very presumptuous... that'd he'd be coming back. He's been back twice to 'do his work'. The first time, I have no idea what happened or what he did... The second time he was there all day from 8 am to 5 pm and I'm not sure what he's been up to. For proof of work, all we've actually received are three double GPO's. Other than trying to up-sell and meander around the house he states he 'serviced' the air conditioning unit (a split system) but actually he didn't re-gas, he just sprayed water on the filters. He was never asked to do any of this. It's been a couple of days since they last left and I've finally managed to pop over to see what the hell is going on. To start with, the range hood is second hand, scratches and grease all over the aluminium frame. The gas-hob is new and on searching the model it's not worth more than $500, & $800 combined but he wants $1500 - pretty interesting... & it's pretty much second hand material with no warranties or manuals. As far as his work goes, I'm not sure on the standards; He's installed one GPO through a double brick wall... looks okay. He's added a new one in the garage in which the wiring is drilled through the wall, on the other side of the wall is the linen and he's brought the wires through the linen and up into the ceiling by drilling though the cornice. Another power point he's taken off the plate of an existing GPO and rewired leaving the existing GPO with wire out the side running to a newly placed GPO. Should I be asking this guy for a certificate of electrical works or safety? My mother in-law has paid $700 in cash, no receipt and no invoice. I find this a bit unsettling and it's borderline con-artistry. I'm meeting up with him tomorrow as my mother in law has asked me to be there to hand back his gas hob and range-hood, she won't be there. Should I be asking him for anything else? I'll be demanding receipts and a proper invoice but my understanding is not all electrical works require a certificate, or do they? If so, what exactly do I ask for or who do I call to have his work checked if he refuses? Is there a ... board of electricians or something, a governing body? My mother in-law, as she states 'doesn't have the balls' and generally comes across as agreeable. I feel she's been taken advantage of and I can't fathom why it would take two full days of work to install three double GPO's. The house was built in 2000/2002 so surly standards aren't so drastically different the whole house needed rewiring, am I right? Re: Con-artist or Normal? Electrical work certificate needed 2Aug 06, 2017 11:02 pm Nienn Interesting post,AFAIK 2nd hand gas appliances are worth next to nothing..Because it's illegal to install them?.
