Congratulations Re: Our First Home - Local Builder 111May 17, 2017 7:57 pm WoW shellu. You will be able to play cricket or maybe some lawn bowls in your back yard. Looking good Our First Home - Local Builder 113May 20, 2017 5:15 pm Can I have some thoughts about window splashbacks and our window locations?
Initially we weren't putting one in, however I am worried about natural light in the kitchen over winter. I have attached photos including the orientation. I think your kitchen will be fine for light, with that window over the sink. I was going to put more windows in my house, but so glad I didn't now. Re: Our First Home - Local Builder 115May 20, 2017 9:01 pm Interesting thoughts.. a few things that could be done just looking at it.. 1. a sola tube? 2. a window splashback - agree could come with negatives like the view.. but otherwise it might be a matter of asking an architect (if possible..?) about the effects of your eaves, alfresco, and the changing sun angles over the seasons to figure out how much light you might lose or gain throughout the year. you could start by trying to read through this article from yourhome.gov - http://www.yourhome.gov.au/passive-design/orientation which talks about orientation and its effect on light into the house (though it focuses more on the heating/cooling effect of light) I hope that kind of helps!? I went through the same thing when finalising our house design myself to go through all the possible light sources in each room, though in hindsight, I think I was really fumbling around with it, more than 'actually knowing' what I was doing. Otherwise, my kitchen is an internal kitchen which faces out towards the alfresco. So I don't expect to have any natural light coming into the kitchen. Our priority in considering the size of our windows were - privacy and energy/passive solar efficiency as ours is in a colder climate and we are in town next to neighbours. I appreciate your thoughts. The reason I went against having a window was we have no view, side fence will be 4m away. But maybe that doesn't matter? I definitely feel like I am fumbling around. My partner keeps trying to explain the sun angles to me. I think considering what our priorities are is a good idea. I do think a priority is natural light, not having to turn on lights during the day and thus saving energy. We have already planned to install a solar skylight, perhaps this will be adequate lighting. Re: Our First Home - Local Builder 117May 20, 2017 10:59 pm Hey shellu. I have a window splash back behind the sink. I also have no views like you with approx 4m to side fence. It was included in the build and I was not sure I would need it but then I realised that it could come in handy for keeping an eye on our grandson if we were outside playing and I needed to go into the kitchen for something. So now I'm planning to put some nice plants along the fence, build a pergola and hopefully a deck out that side for entertaining. We should only have sun in the mornings on that side of the house so it will be nice in the afternoon and evenings. Re: Our First Home - Local Builder 119May 21, 2017 8:40 am Shellu I finally found your thread love the house design and the changes that you have made! It's going to look beautiful once it's done. Can't wait to see it all take shape! We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds. The quote above was purely for “pre-wiring” so the blinds company can install the motors and blinds.
