Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Jan 18, 2017 2:30 pm Hi, new here... We're renovating our holiday unit and could use some fresh ideas as to layout of kitchen/dining/lounge. The unit is tiny, so trying to maximise lounging area to accommodate overnight guests as well as making it feel more spacious. Previous owners renovated and moved kitchen closer to entry door and along outside facing wall. We feel it may be better to put kitchen back to original location near the bathroom to define area. Design 1... Galley style with drawers, sink and dishwasher. Fridge with microwave on top, cupboard and built in oven and a narrow 2 burner cooktop to fit. I don't think a huge food store/pantry is necessary, but a dishwasher is essential. Rangehood above cooktop, ducting to outside. Perhaps a row of high cupboards spanning whole wall, above bathroom door (not shown). Distance between cabinets is 800 mm, is this too narrow? Would prefer to use Ikea or other flatpack for a cost effective reno. Design 2... Takes up more room, but has better storage. The corners are tricky to design. Picture 3... Ikea cabinets won't fit the layout as per design 1, but it looks good! The pictures below show dimensions and a basic idea of layout. We are a small family (one teenager) and we enjoy having guests. Any ideas would be most appreciated, thanks. Design 1... Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Design 2... I know this means traipsing through the bedroom all the time. But gosh, that kitchen is tiny. It's smaller than your bathroom! Yes, 800 space is too small. I would run your cupboards along the window side. Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 4Jan 31, 2017 2:33 pm If you move the bedroom door so that both bedroom doors are together and then move the bathroom door to the centre of the kitchen wall that would give you 2 walls to run the kitchen on, and 1050 between benches if both are 700mm wide, or more if one or other drops back to 600mm depth You could then flip your couch to the opposite wall and have the table at the end of the kitchen bench or in front of the kitchen. This means the tv also wouldn't be on a bedroom wall,so less disturbance if someone is sleeping while the another is watching tv. If you can't move the doors I would have an L shaped kitchen on both walls. Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 5Feb 03, 2017 10:49 am perhaps incorporate a breakfast bar in the larger bench, and ditch the dining table from the living room entirely?. If you go for a single F&P dishdrawer, they can be placed under an oven (ie dishwasher & oven in the same 600mm cabinet width). Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 6Feb 05, 2017 7:57 pm How about adding the cupboards from the bathroom door down to the wall between the 2 bedrooms? If you allow access to the overhead cupboards from both the kitchen side and the bedroom ( approx from 1.5-2m from the kitchen and above 2m doors on the bedroom side), you will have a lot more storage for kitchen and spare linen. Also this will create better partition between the living area and the bedroom. Add some wall art so when you walk out of the bathroom and the inside bedroom, you don't just see everything in the unit. This will give you an 'L' shaped kitchen with approx. 1.6m each side (the other side will be along the bathroom wall) with both overhead cupboards and the base cupboards. If you worry that the cupboards will dim down the room, just mount the top cupboards to the ceiling and leave the middle area hollow instead of adding a splash board. The fridge can be moved to where the dishwasher currently is, next to the window and sofa bed. The fridge, sink and the oven/stove will form a triangle in the kitchen, which is always recommended by kitchen designers. As all cupboards are against walls, 600mm bench top will be sufficient. This also leaves about 90cm for you to turn around in the kitchen. Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 7Feb 08, 2017 9:17 am Thank you all for your ideas and input, it is such a hard space to work with... Unfortunately due to budget constraints moving doorways is not possible. We had thought to put the fridge in the bedroom doorway, and put a sliding door in the wall between this opening and bathroom door, but decided against as this change would achieve llittle gain. We prefer to keep a dining table as is more comfortable... and I don't quite understand arova's ideas. I have changed layout again, there's less storage and a smaller tv but I think it may work better. Any thoughts or ideas would be again much appreciated, see my pics below. Thanks again Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 8Mar 07, 2017 10:14 pm I actually liked layout 1... Don't all yell at me at once! I'd have had the dining table hinged to that wall, though, so you could fold it down and put the chairs against the wall until wanted. That way a pull out sofa bed/lounge could accomodate even more guests. Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 9Mar 17, 2017 10:14 am In a space that small, I'd think about options a little bit outside the box. If you were to run a strip of bench heigh joinery right along the long wall that steps down to become a tv cabinet, that could be good. I'd avoid overhead cabinets if possible completely, some open shelves instead perhaps. You could get rid of the need for an L or island in that case. Money on an integrated fridge and dishwasher would be well spent to keep the visual clutter down. Re: Tiny kitchen layout help 10Mar 19, 2017 12:03 pm Ditch the dining table and put in a nook. Run bench all the way along wall. Also run the built in all the way along to accommodate the television that way you can put the lounge on the wall of the front bedroom. Storage problem solved, and plenty of seating. You never have a fridge against wall as you’ve drawn. The doors can’t open past 90 degrees and it’s difficult and maybe impossible to remove drawers 2 15600 Hi, We're building a double-storey in Perth and I'm undecided with the kitchen sink situation.
