Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Solar hot water recommendation. 21Nov 02, 2016 3:44 pm We are building a house in the south east of Perth on an acre block. We do not have reticulated gas so need to either look at bottled gas or go a solar HWS and induction cook top. Does anyone have recommendations on a solar HWS for Perth? Hot summers and mild winters, plenty of sunshine all year round. Sorry forgot to add we are a family of 5 with regular visitors throughout the year. Getting a good solar hot water system, where you can avoid any boosting (other than for periods of no sun/cloudy days), is what you need to go for, and the days that you do need boosting, electric boost can been your cheaper answer. I have a Evacuated Tube system here in SE Qld, that rarely needs boosting, and is a mid element electric boost, 315 litre tank, with 30 tubes on the roof. Re: Solar hot water recommendation. 23Nov 05, 2016 11:28 am Yeah I'd say either a flat plate or evac tube, minimum 300 litre tank with an electric element on a thermostat set to 60 degrees C. If you get very cold weather (into the minuses for an extended period) you may need a special anti freeze model. The summary of his findings are; In Australia, flat plate collectors provide the most economical solution in almost every location. It is true that evac tubes have a higher efficiency, however due to our high solar irradiance this efficiency is not needed. The flat plate collector systems provide the best return on investment and also are generally safer due to the lower operating temperatures. The other important thing to note from his paper is that there is no one-size-fits-all approach, the system needs to be designed according to the location and use (by someone competent).
