We are building the Tathra with Fairhaven. We are still in the early stages and have not been to the colour selection as yet. Any advice on what to upgrade and what to keep as standard? Are the fairhaven prices reasonable on upgrades? Feeling nervous we won't be able to keep the build within budget. Hi Fnr, We are planning to go with Fairhaven's Newport. In terms of upgrades, have a look at these things: * widening garage 1-1.5m with wide roller door from the backyard (if your block wide enough) * adding brick infills in lieu of cement sheets above garage door and windows, eaves - gives a bit nicer look * depth of the kitchen island - we've made our 1200mm deep - more working space and less water splashes on the floor from the opposite side of the island * cement tiles in lieu of colorbond roof - we like tiled roof and should less noisy when heavy rain. * carpets to category 2 - didn't like cat 1 selection and underlay is better with cat 2 * kitchen appliances upgrade - we cook a lot so wanted better quality * added few stacks of pot drawers in lieu of standard cabinets * splashback tiles - haven't decided but probably something from cat 2 (upgrade) * sinks, toilets, tapware - we're looking to upgrade these, it's about $50-100 per item so doesn't add too much to the budget * higher doors on m if you decide to have higher ceilings Re: Fairhaven Homes Newport 361 in Sth East Melbourne 336Mar 10, 2017 8:36 am Fnr Hi, All this lock up stages soundsexciting. We probably would have built that instead as most of our big costs were structural and on the Tathra we wouldn't have changed much at all. We had quite a few upgrades. Probably the biggest things though were our site costs were more than we were hoping (around 23k) and electrical set us back about 6k also. We signed up when they had the promo of a 7k voucher to spend at colours so our colours upgrades were around 10k but we only paid 3. We also added refrig aircon which was around 14k too. It really depends what you want to do to how much it will set you back. Our contract was around 80k more than the base price but around 20k of that was structural things. Re: Fairhaven Homes Newport 361 in Sth East Melbourne 337Mar 10, 2017 12:12 pm Thanks for the advice guys. We have already requested for the garage extension. There are some structural columns in the living area i want to taket out. That is costed around 5k i think. May i know how much the kitchen benchtop extension cost? Also any idea how much it will be to change the benchtop from catergory 1 stone to category 3? I loved the wide corridors on the newport. But we really wanted a bedroom downstairs which is why we went for the tathra. The narrow corridors are the only drawback. But we have been given the option to extend it by 200mm. Re: Fairhaven Homes Newport 361 in Sth East Melbourne 338Mar 10, 2017 1:17 pm When we looked at the Tathra recently I said the only thing I'd want to change is to move the garage across so the entry was wider. We extended the bench too but only to 900mm and it was part of our quote to redesign the whole kitchen so I have no costs sorry. We also chose a cat 1 stone. I would suggest upgrading not only the carpet but the underlay too. If you go to cat 3 carpet the underlay is included but Cat 2 you have to upgrade both. It was on our must have list after putting Cat 1 in our last house and not even being able to kneel on the floors as they were so hard (with 2 young kids was a must for us) Re: Fairhaven Homes Newport 361 in Sth East Melbourne 339Mar 10, 2017 1:19 pm Altogether it was about 3k to make the island part of the bench 900mm deep + add 300m benchtop overhang. We've also made the island longer by 400mm. This included additinal cabinets, extra stone benctop and splashback tiling on the side. We didn't ask about cost of benchtop upgrade but don't think it'd be too expensive. If I guess, i'd say around 1k mark. Maybe you can call their showroom and ask.
