Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Feb 02, 2016 10:40 am We have a property with a large amount of greenery down the back (which I like). The problem is that it seems to attract hordes of mosquitos from around the neighbourhood which get into the house and attack us in the backyard. I have done all the usual stuff like check to make sure that there is not any stagnant water around but still they come. I don’t particularly want to clear away all the greenery and don’t particularly want to spray chemicals. I was thinking of installing a pond with some fish to see if they can do something about the mosquitos. My understanding is that provided that the pond is more that 30 cm deep that mosquitos can’t breed there (and so it won’t add to the problem) and certain species of fish will eat mosquitos. Has anyone else tried this and had any success? Re: Building a pond to control mosquitos 2Feb 02, 2016 11:02 am Seeing as most mossies can fly 2 - 3kms a night ( some salt marsh ones can fly anything up to forty kms in a night ) keeping your place stagnant water free might not solve your problem although anything that might keep them in check is worth doing. I don't know about the 300mm depth either. We have a 500- 600mm deep pond at the back of our place and when there are no tadpoles in it they still manage to breed in there. If you are after fish then get some of the excellent little native fish like the Blue - Eye which is what a friend has in their pond. http://www.nativefish.asn.au/faq.html Stewie Re: Building a pond to control mosquitos 4Feb 02, 2016 1:44 pm Some of the native species are pretty voracious when it comes to the mossie larvae and would quickly deplete the pool of them. That will depend also on how big your pond is and how many fish you stock it with. After they get rid of them you may have to give them a little fish food every now and then to keep them happy. Apart from that they are about as low maintenance as you can get ( and they're native as well ). Where you buy them from ask about how many to get. Stewie Re: Building a pond to control mosquitos 5Feb 03, 2016 7:28 am D101 you also have to remember that mossies may need water to breed - mostly in ponds but even in the water of large crown leaves but they eat plant material and nectar. Unless you nuke your yard of all greenery and turn it into a desert so there is nothing for them to eat, you will still have a few, pond or no pond. We have a pond with frogs in so coupled with the inevitable tadpoles they stop mossies breeding in there ( 90% of the time anyway - occasionally all the taddies mature, turn into frogs and leave ) . We have a lot of greenery too but the mossies seem to stay away from the house pretty much. A few large lavender plants and a few strong herbs like garlic chives on our back deck may be part of the reason why. Any non-chemical solution is better in my book. Stewie To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless.
