Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 22Jan 09, 2016 12:59 am You should have done a bit more research on the carpet colour. I don't even know if redbook have such carpet. I can't find it on the web. Taubmans has the paint colour call silver spoon It doesn't look silver either. I found this http://www.carpetone.com.au/dubbo/product/carpet/fawkner-park/silver-spoon/ does your carpet look like this? It is the stupid sale person that gave you the wrong name for carpet. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 23Jan 09, 2016 1:58 am I made the mistake of trusting the colour consultant. She called the carpet Silver Spoon so I took her word for it. Redbook have a range called Paletta (I think that's how it's spelt) and they have a colour called Silver Spoon. It's at Andersen's Carpets. However, my builder calls this range Altitude. It's nearly impossible to find on the web but it's in some stores. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ This is the colour carpet I selected. It's called Hollywood Nights Gull 94. It's a colour sample off the web. This is the carpet that was installed. It's by Redbook and called Silver Spoon. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 25Jan 09, 2016 7:43 am Not sure if I regret building as yet as we are still in the early stages, but I don't think I would ever build again. As with most people our builder was great at the start then once we handed over our deposit the customer service went down hill. They told me they have over 80 jobs going at the moment and they don't have enough staff. I was dealing with the local display home in NSW they then told me I need to contact QLD head office for any queries. I have been waiting 8 weeks for a variation & a start date for our build... spoken to 4 different people in the company after waiting weeks for a reply they pass me onto someone else. My view of our build that has not even started yet is not looking good... if they ever start. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 26Jan 09, 2016 9:05 am OllyOllyRumbah This is how it worked THX - went to colour selection appointment and said I want grey carpet. Shown the only grey carpet to choose from. It was a dark grey in the deluxe range. Told it was called Silver Spoon by Redbook and would cost nearly $3000. Said that's the one I want because it matches my colour scheme. Never given a sample. Trusted that the consultant had the right name. I mean Silver Spoon sounds like it would be grey. Go to my site before Christmas and see a light brown carpet has been installed. What was installed doesn't match the sample I was shown. Also, if my builder didn't give me a choice of colours to choose from I wouldn't have built with them. Unfortunately that is still on you. Did you look at the base of the sample? the information for the carpet is normally there, did you visit the supplier to view it yourself? It is unfortunate but in the end it is just carpet, don't get too caught up in things right now. Trust me, you soon forget the mistakes you make in your home and if one does continue to bug you; change it when you can. Sorry, that's not what I meant, I mean the majority of people buy established homes hence they get no choice in colour schemes, it's something they have to change themselves. When we build we get to pick everything, but that likewise means it is up to us to double-triple check our selections. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 29Jan 09, 2016 6:10 pm OllyOllyRumbah perthgirl16 I totally agree. We are in the middle of a nightmare too. But once they get you to sign all bets are off and they have you over a barrel. Agree 100%. My carpet battle continues - this is one stuff up I feel very strongly about. Paying nearly $3000 for carpet that is ugly annoys me. I just found out the carpet company offers a 30 day replacement guarantee for reasons such as the colour doesn't match your furniture or you don't like the feel of it under your feet. I have been in contact with one of the owners of this company but he failed to tell me about this guarantee. Considering the carpet I selected isn't even close to what was installed - I selected dark grey and a light brown has been installed, let's see if the guarantee applies to me. Staff at my builders are fobbing me off and before Christmas the carpet company owner was more than happy to help but now he wants nothing to do with me and won't return my calls or texts. The name of the carpet is irrelevant, if called be called the big friendly giant for all it really matters. The real key is did you see a sample? If so does the carpet install match that sample? If not then why not? I'll tell you I wouldn't be choosing anything without having seen a sample in the flesh. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 30Jan 09, 2016 6:30 pm I saw the sample in the flesh. Was told it was called Silver Spoon. So not only was the wrong colour installed, it's also from a different range so I know nothing about it - warranty, quality etc. The wrong carpet was installed because the colour consultant called the dark grey carpet I selected Silver Spoon but Silver Spoon is a light brown coloured carpet. Found out that the 30 Day Replacement guarantee the carpet company offers doesn't apply to me because I ordered it through my builder. If I had ordered it on my own I'd be covered by the guarantee which says you can have it replaced if you don't like it for any reason. My builder claims I got a good deal on the carpet but I didn't. I rang the carpet company today and found out if I had ordered the carpet that has been installed on my own I would have paid $2800. I paid my builder $2744. As far as I'm concerned $56 isn't a good deal especially if it means I'm exempt from the replacement guarantee. My builder is carrying on as though I saved a lot buying the carpet through him. Has me concerned because he considers the discount I got such a big deal - did I pay more for the dark grey carpet in the deluxe range that I had selected but have had a cheaper carpet installed??? Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 31Jan 09, 2016 6:37 pm icywater Cheer up, the carpet look nice with neutral white wall. I don't like brown. The fact remains - I chose dark grey carpet in the deluxe range and paid nearly $3000 for it to be installed in 4 bedrooms. Instead a light brown carpet has been installed and I have no idea what range it's from. I should get what I paid for. My neighbour is building with the same builder as you and their build seems to have gone nowhere in over a month or maybe more. It seems to have just stalled. By the sounds of it, you saw a dark grey carpet and the colour consultant called it silver spoon. Did you verify the dark grey carpet was actually silver spoon at any point? The undersink piping does look sh*ddy, however based on the bracket it looks like a cover is placed over it? why were the pipes ripped out? On a different note: This forum says the word s h o d d y is forbidden? I mean huh! Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 35Jan 09, 2016 7:50 pm I can see your frustration with the carpet, I'd be furious. Did you take any photos on the day by any chance? I know I was all excited and wanted to remember what colours I'd picked for everything so I took photos. If you did too it might give you some leverage in your discussions with the builder. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 36Jan 09, 2016 8:09 pm Hi THX I made the mistake of trusting the consultant at my colour selection appointment at my builders head office. I triple checked the carpets name and left it at that because it was the ONLY grey carpet I had to choose from as all the rest were grey. And the name Silver Spoon made sense to be a grey carpet. Also, no samples are given out for carpet selection. The consultant made numerous other mistakes that I had to deal with. These included the wrong front door and the wrong kitchen sink tap. I picked these up early (before signing off) but she argued and was quite rude. Then after the selection was signed off on she told me the toilets I had selected and had been signed off on in the final contract had to be changed. Not because they weren't readily available but because their supplier would not supply them. And I was not allowed to get them myself at Bunnings despite the final contracts being signed. Also, the builder forgot to tell the painter about the different colour facade. I saw that they the wrong colour had been used which meant I would not meet covenant requirements. The colour consultant was very disorganised. Always telling me something hadn't been signed when she hadn't even told me it needed to be signed. Every week it was always something new. The plumbing has already been ripped out once because the shroud didn't fit over it the first time. In my opinion, using plywood in plumbing seems not too high a quality of work. I requested a drop waste but this request has been ignored. Plus the tiles meant to be above the wall hung sink are missing and the mirror is huge. I was told it would be small and nowhere does it state the size. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 37Jan 09, 2016 8:13 pm Bjhf I can see your frustration with the carpet, I'd be furious. Did you take any photos on the day by any chance? I know I was all excited and wanted to remember what colours I'd picked for everything so I took photos. If you did too it might give you some leverage in your discussions with the builder. I can't find any photos. The appointment was so rushed and the 'consultant' just seemed to get annoyed the longer I took to make decisions. Plus, I assumed she wouldn't make so many mistakes. Honestly, it just seemed like she wanted me out of there. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 38Jan 09, 2016 8:47 pm Sorry your carpet experience has been so bad. We've had this problem too. they have put us through sooooo many staff. We are on our 4th site supervisor and about our 6th Office Liason lady. You try and sort things out but they just don't care - they just say well it wasn't me I don't know what you are talking about. I started taking so many photos it wasn't funny and following up all meetings and phonecalls with emails to the point where our 2nd site supervisor had a go at me in front of the tiler as " all your long winded emails are blocking up my ipad". I had only ever written to the liason officer ( he said all emails automatically get sent to him) even if only her name is on the email. I brought it up with her and she swore blind that it wasn't true. What can you do. We've been having a tiling problem since July of 2015. The tiles I chose were wonderful - love them. However - how they were to be laid is not the problem. I suspect because we were put through sooo many people it got missed - I followed it up and was told to wait for the meeting with the tiler. So I waited. Never happened. They called me to site about a different screwup of theirs and I saw the tiles already on the wall - exactly how I did not want them. Slapped up the wall in straight lines. Now all my tiling ensuite/ bathroom and laundry looks like every public toilet in every shopping centre in Perth. Turns out when there is no direction printed on the job sheet - the tiler on the day makes the choice. Just lovely, you'd link they'd call and just check - esp seeing as my mobile number was on all the sheets of instructions. So now that is another thing to get fixed - which they don't want to as they keep telling me who will pay????? That's what I asked and paid extra for. I've only had a few mistakes with the tiles and that's mainly because I met with the tiler before the job was to start. Did you pay extra for how the tiles were to be laid? I had to pay extra for the brick bond style but did so because I chose subway type tiles in my bathrooms from floor to ceiling. Re: Anyone else regret building a new home? 40Jan 09, 2016 9:04 pm Those colour selection appointments can be problematic. I like both carpet colours, but I'd be super annoyed if the wrong colour was installed! That being said, I saw my builder's carpet samples 7 months ago, got one photo, told him I want to go with the dark brown as per the photo.. I have no idea what its called, and I've not been offered to see the sample again (the sample seems to have disappeared). This is probably a good lesson for me, I better check that out before I sign the contract.. I had a similar issue with roof tiles, but was caught right away. I was shown a sample, (only had 2 choices!!) I was told it was Twilight. A week later the consultant emailed me to say 'opps, sorry that's not twilight its gunmetal'. I probably wouldn't have noticed after they were installed as the colours were quite similar, but its not the point. A survey must’ve completed by a certified surveyor.
