Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 26, 2015 5:31 pm Hi, I am doing my kitchen, I am having Warm White Vinyl wrap drawers and cupboards and Alpine White Quantum Quartz benchtop. I am not having any handles and I am having Blum Servo drive drawers. I'm having a shadow line, between the bench and the top drawers, but not having a colour like in the photo below I am thinking of having a 20mm benchtop, what are your thoughts as I am starting to panic as to what it will look like and that it might look a bit thin. The photo below, looks to me to be 20mm, do you think I am right? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Thoughts on Bench Thinkness 2Sep 26, 2015 7:25 pm Yes, that's 20mm. I think it looks good. I have a stone dining table in 20mm with a shadowline (sort of) and it looks good but I went 40mm in my kitchen. I'm also a bit concerned that because it is only 20mm on the edge, it might be more prone to chipping? Re: Thoughts on Bench Thinkness 5Sep 27, 2015 12:15 am travisaus you'll chip 20mm just as easy as 40 if you're not careful. I have heard that it can chip along the edge. The cabinet maker has told me, that if I do happen to chip it, to make sure I keep any bits. He said they can be repaired, if I have the piece. Also I have gone with an insert sink, as I have felt around a couple of friends under-bench sinks and at the front of the sinks the stone is rough, like it has minute chips out of it. Re: Thoughts on Bench Thinkness 6Sep 27, 2015 6:38 am I prefer the 20 over the 40mm, I think it provides a cleaner look... having said that we've just place an order and our kitchen guys persuaded me to go 40mm, mainly because in the package we chose it was almost the same price and we he said 40mm would be better for our breakfast bar. On the 'top' v 'undermount' sink option, my mother has experienced two issues with her undermount sink, probably due to lack of care when washing: she has chipped the sink edge twice in 18 months, and chipped a few pieces of crockery by gently catching them against the side of the stone sink opening (remember stone is very hard and unforgiving). Quite a few of the kitchen companies I spoke to said they advised top mount. We also found there are now quite a lot of top mount sinks that look fairly sleek making the visual difference much less, hence we've decided on a 75cm single bowl sink, big enough to accommodate a draining board cover, and/or to was the barbecue plates. Re: Thoughts on Bench Thinkness 7Sep 28, 2015 9:49 am We have 20mm with a showdown line and it's lovely. Plus, it shouldn't chip that easily if it's a quality stone although I know our builder had issues with stone quality for a while and so bench tops got replaced. Re: Thoughts on Bench Thinkness 8Sep 28, 2015 1:18 pm With a shadow line, I think a 20mm looks better than a 40mm. Though if you don't have a shadow line, then I can see value in 40mm, as it give a more robust and bulky look, but it is a matter of style rather than one being specifically better than the other. I'm a bit surprised though that you're going to the expense of servo drive drawers, but only having vinyl wrap fronts. Re: Thoughts on Bench Thinkness 9Sep 28, 2015 5:08 pm Its all personal opinion and taste. I personally think 20mm looks to thin and out of proportion to the cabinets. 20mm is normally a standard thickness put in cheaper kitchens where 40mm is the upgrade. If you want to know what 95% of my customers do that put in expensive kitchens they put in either solid 30mm or 40-60mm mitred! All of the above counts for nothing though, its what you personally like! It's light and sleek looking rather than bulky. I am choosing 20mm not because its cheaper but because I prefer the look of it. Choose what you like and you'll be happy! I am choosing 20mm not because its cheaper but because I prefer the look of it. Choose what you like and you'll be happy! I have heard that said for the last 10years! 20mm is used more in spec built houses as a standard inclusion where 40mm is the upgrade. As you said though "choose what you like and you'll be happy!" there is no right or wrong answer here. I chose 20mm stone not as a cost saving thing, but because I think it looks better. The kitchen had waterfall ends also done in the 20mm, and the comments from friends and family all think it looks great. But as with anything, it is down to personal taste. I can not see that thickness of your top would have anything to do with chipping. It takes a fair hit to damage a quartz top, so if you whatever you do to damage a 20mm top, will probably do the same to a 40mm. Small chips are repairable regardless. Oh and enjoy the servo drive!
