Browse Forums Renovation + Home Improvement 1 Jul 21, 2015 7:56 am Can those of you who have lived with floating floors please advise me .. can they be laid so they don’t sound ‘tinny’ and so they feel solid? We went to a place selling bamboo and they said the showroom was laid with floating floor, and it felt very solid and quiet but I wasn’t convinced. They also said that the bamboo would cost an extra $20 m2 to direct stick, as an extra layer of glue was needed. This would make it as expensive as a solid timber floor. And that their bamboo couldn’t be secret nailed because of the profile. I’ve come across websites that say they can direct stick or secret nail strandwoven bamboo, then this is contradicted by another company. Am confused. The floor will be 10m x 5.5m, new, insulated, timber not concrete, 1m from the ground so moisture shouldn't be a problem. So, my questions – Floating floor cf solid timber? Floating bamboo cf direct glued or nailed? Any suppliers in Sydney who do direct stick or secret nail bamboo? Any suppliers who have solid timber that doesn’t break the bank? Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 2Aug 16, 2015 8:19 pm Hi Lenarufus, I have tongue and groove strand woven bamboo floating floor laid over a minimal underlay & black waterproofing membrane - I absolutely love it! I don't have any movement or noise with the exception of maybe under the dining table where crumbs have gotten into the grooves - and all that takes is a vacuum to fix. It's so hard wearing and beautiful. I bought mine from a guy called Ross in ramsgate - ultimate blinds and shutters I think - i have his number somewhere - it was very economic as we did 140m2. Any one have any advise on this,? I am concerned of the water dripping from hands on the floor and leaving any mark on them. thanks 18/03/15 Deposit 02/09/15 CDC 22/09/15 Slab 05/12/15 Frames 15/12/15 Brick started. 11/04/16 Roof start 04/05/16 Roof finish 09/07/16 Gyprock. Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 4Aug 19, 2015 9:32 am Floating floors are not installed with nails and adhesives. The just ‘float’ by simply sitting on an underlay. There are special underlay materials you can use to reduce sound transmissions.
Hope this helps.
Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 5Aug 20, 2015 8:56 am I did my own bamboo floating floor. There were a few spots that creaked a bit due to a bit of unevenness in the slab or working over tiles. I put it through the kitchen and had no issues with the odd drop of water or spill that was mopped up quickly, it is reasonably water resistant, you can mop it no worries. With kids you get plenty of spills and we had plenty of towels to wipe up on hand though. However our dishwasher got a slow leak in the drain outlet and I discovered the leak because the boards curled a bit where the water was running to. After the dishwasher was fixed and the floor dried out you couldn't tell as the boards returned to their original shape. The floor had been wet from underneath for a couple of days, but I put a fan on it for the next few days after fixing the fault. My parents also had a ceiling leak over a bamboo (stuck down) floor while they were away for a weekend and it has left an area with a bit of damage, not too bad that requires a repair (yet!) Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 6Aug 20, 2015 9:55 pm thanks Spottiswoode. So we need to wipe out the drop of water otherwise it may leave a mark. I guess as you suggested, we need to have towels around to wipe off the drops 18/03/15 Deposit 02/09/15 CDC 22/09/15 Slab 05/12/15 Frames 15/12/15 Brick started. 11/04/16 Roof start 04/05/16 Roof finish 09/07/16 Gyprock. Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 7Aug 21, 2015 3:22 pm Initially we wiped up every drop immediately, but quickly worked out that it's only the bigger spills that need wiping up immediately, and you'd do that with any flooring. The coating on the flooring we had was quite good and it's only when there was a chance of a reasonable amount of water seeping into the joints that it was a problem. Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 8Aug 21, 2015 11:15 pm will it leave any stain if we don't wipe the water off? That's is what I am worried. Currently have tiles, want to go for timber floor to avoid the cold. 18/03/15 Deposit 02/09/15 CDC 22/09/15 Slab 05/12/15 Frames 15/12/15 Brick started. 11/04/16 Roof start 04/05/16 Roof finish 09/07/16 Gyprock. Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 9Aug 22, 2015 10:57 pm No worries with marks on our floors. Everything wiped off easily. One of the reasons we installed the floor was to get off the cold hard tiles. Well worth it for that aspect. Re: questions re floating floors/solid/bamboo 10Aug 22, 2015 11:44 pm thanks, I am still waiting for the build to start, it is being delayed due to builder having issues obtaining HOW. 18/03/15 Deposit 02/09/15 CDC 22/09/15 Slab 05/12/15 Frames 15/12/15 Brick started. 11/04/16 Roof start 04/05/16 Roof finish 09/07/16 Gyprock. Engineering timber is certainly a less fuss option, times cheaper to supply and install and better withstands humidity. 1 16199 If this is a custom build then I would expect the builder to set out the door frame closer to the wall to avoid the gap between architrave and the wall and or specify… 9 8434 Thanks Simon, I guess I'm no concerned with the volume of the noise rather that dead and hollow sound and feel that is associated with floating floors.
