Browse Forums Kitchen Corner 1 Sep 15, 2014 5:50 pm According to my attempted kitchen plan drawings, I can either fit in a 2.63m long island bench (Option 1) or 1.8m full height wall cupboards (Option 2). I have attached the 2 drawings I am thinking might work - if anyone can think of other options please do tell . The windows that are shown in the images we will end up changing to fit into the kitchen design/layout. With Option 1, I have allowed 1m distance between the wall and island bench. Is this enough space? I have put my measurements in the drawings. To maximise bench space I am thinking of putting an under bench oven and grill (if going with Option 1)- and as for Option 2 is it better to incorporate the oven and grill into the full height wall cupboards or leave under the bench? I guess the trend with both my drawings is that I am trying to avoid corner cupboards. Is this wise? So my question is if you had to choose between an island bench or wall cupboards, which one would you prefer, and why. Also whilst I am at it, why not ask, which design do you prefer? thank you Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ [/img] Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 2Sep 15, 2014 7:46 pm do you have the dimensions of the windows and know the distance from the corners where they start? how wide is your fridge? what is the size of the table? what size of sink do you want to install, single bowl, double bowl or 1 1/2 bowl? Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 3Sep 16, 2014 12:43 am I don't think either of your designs is making the best use of your space to maximise storage, bench space, and efficiency. Why are you trying to avoid corner cupboards? Where is the pantry located? [sneakersss] Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 4Sep 16, 2014 7:31 am Compromise is the name of the game. I like Island benches. BUT - you need storage space. I'm not sure what else you have - eg pantry ? Do you have cupboards above sink etc ? The bench will give you storage space under as well. Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 5Sep 16, 2014 1:27 pm Thank you for your comments. A little more background, what we are doing is converting the blessed-to-have-an-oversized laundry into the kitchen / meals and moving the laundry into the bathroom. Currently the kitchen sits in the middle of the house looking Westerly into neighbour's house. So moving it to the back it will enjoy the Northern sun, and I can keep an eye on the kids in the backyard. The old kitchen location will be converted into a bedroom. In response to your queries: - fridge I am allowing 1m wide cavity (the fridge is 80cm wide so allowing 10cm either side) - we have not bought the table yet however we will be looking at a 10 seater - either 1.5 or double bowl sink - left side window is 1.38m from top corner & 67cm from bottom corner, the northern window is 49cm from corner. - there is a pantry located off the hallway which is reasonably sized and will be used for bulk purchases / storage - the left side window (which faces West) I am not sure whether to block the whole side with floor to ceiling cupboards & incorporating wall oven & grill into it or to have the window as it is in the centre and either side have over head cupboards - perhaps using it as a glass display. - I am wanting to avoid corner cupboards as it is a pain getting into them, but if there has to be a corner, then so be it. - Ideally I would *like* to have handless drawers instead of cupboards, again if it can be fitted in this space. - Above the sink I would like to keep it only under bench storage as I want to give it a feel of openess and space. Looking through the inspirational "Show me your kitchen" thread, and coupling it with research, I want to have an idea of layout and design, equipment, etc, so that when we talk with the cabinet makers I want to make sure that I have an idea of what I want & where (and allowing them to provide their opinion / feedback) and to make sure I have considered as much as possible in the design leading up to it. Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 7Sep 16, 2014 3:20 pm the Island is 120cm tief and 215cm long. On the left side of the island is a dishwasher next to the window, followed by a 80cm wide sink cabinet and 70cm wide base cabinet. On the back of the island, facing the table beginnning at the window are 2 x 80cm and a 50cm wide base cabinet. On the plan at the bottom beginning right SBS or fridge 60cm wide tall cabinet for provision 60cm wide tall cabinet for oven and built-in microwave above behind a lift door. The corner is blind, above it is a 60cm cabinet with a roller shutter door. On the western side of the kitchen beginning after the blind corner are 3 x 90cm drawer cabinets, the top one with the cooktop ca. 20cm wide base cabinet for large oil bottles All base cabinets, exept for the sink cabinet have drawers. Depending on the height of your benchtop, you could have 1 shallow drawer and 2 deep drawers. If the bench height allows for higher carcasses, you can have all cabinets with 2 shallow drawers and 2 deep drawers. But it is up to you. Your dining table is in the way and becomes an obstacle you have to get around to do anything. The space is also not wide enough to accommodate it. At 3630mm, say your benchtops and cupboards are 600mm deep, a 10 person dining table would be around 900mm wide for the smallest option, leaving you with 765mm space on either side - which doesn't take into account chairs encroaching into the space and being able to open cupboard doors. Even if you go with 450mm deep for your full height cupboards then you're only picking up an extra 150mm. You'll find the kitchen too cramped and you won't be able to work in it with people seated at the table. Completed a knock down and rebuild in northern Melbourne. Handover completed 27/09/2013 and now moved in. Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 9Sep 16, 2014 4:09 pm Evelyn wow!! thank you so much for the time you put into putting the drawings together, greatly appreciated, gives me more food for thought. Can I ask, what program did you use? Bluesuede I can probably move the kitchen table to the other side of the thoroughfare, I just put it into Option 2 to see how it fits and left it there. Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 10Sep 16, 2014 4:22 pm Not sure of what you want to do with the other end of the room. Have you considered having the table there, and perhaps moving the kitchen to a more central position, with a butlers kitchen/pantry included at the end? Just throwing in one from left field. Sue Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 11Sep 16, 2014 5:49 pm as others said, it would be more helpful if you put up a plan of the whole room and/or house. Otherwise it is a lot of guesswork. If posters are more detailed in their request, they can achieve more and better answers. The table I made is 240cm long as you were requesting a table for 10. Per person you have to calculate min 60cm in width and at least 70cm space between a table and the next object, let's say a wall. More is always better. The program is a kitchen program by a large German kitchen manufacturer. The name is ALNO, the planner can be download in English. In Germany, kitchens are mostly bought from large firms, fewer are made by a cabinet maker. Therefor kitchens in Germany are a lot cheaper than in Australia. If you wish to see a different configation, I'm happy to try another option. Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 12Sep 16, 2014 8:34 pm Sue... that i did not think of.... now you might be onto something, thank you!! Evelyn thank you you are very kind. I do not want to trouble you i will measure again and redraw taking Sue's idea into consideration along with proper floorplan Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 13Sep 18, 2014 12:29 pm I noticed in some pics cupboards don't (appear to) go to ceiling - is this just in the picture ? Re: Island Bench or Wall Cupboards 14Sep 18, 2014 1:28 pm no, they don't go to the ceiling. The program I use has x amount of cabinet types, but not all what is possible in the "real world". Normally you would cover the top with a panel in the colour of the front. However, in this case it was irrelevant because the poster only had questions about the general layout.
