Browse Forums Heating, Cooling & Insulation Re: Gas vs Electric Heating 21Sep 10, 2014 8:25 pm We have Solar (3.5kw), ducted air (Actron), Nat gas (h/w and cooktop). Its all very nice BUT if I had time over would give more serious thought to not getting gas connected and going all elec+solar. -We have an access fee for both gas and elec, whereas if had gone elec only, would have extra $15 +/- odd per month (being the gas access fee, not including usage) to go towards the extra elec being used. -Must have someone at home during the day to take advantage of solar to run the washer/dryer etc. as there is no savings/sense to have solar feeding into the grid giving you 6c x kWh and then coming home from work and turning the washer/dryer on at 20c or even 50c x kWh. Just a bit extra info to throw in the mix for you !!!! Re: Gas vs Electric Heating 22Sep 10, 2014 8:37 pm Thanks for that I just heard about someone not going connected with gas last weekend. They really wanted a gas cooktop but wanted the rest electric so ended up with gas canisters which was cheaper then the connection fee. They were it's setting dishwashers and washing machines before they left for work so it used solar. How do you find your 3.5kw solar going? Can you say the living sqm of your house? I'm thinking between 3.5-4kw for our 230sqm living but haven't spoken to professionals yet. Re: Gas vs Electric Heating 23Sep 10, 2014 9:13 pm Cheers TheGoogs, Not sure how big our house is, will have a look at the plans and post later. A fairly big house though, 2 storey 5 beds, 2 sitting rms, combined kit/dining/family, but only 2 adults. You can see it on the thread in the signature below, also the solar power output in the pvoutput link. Solar has kept our qtly bill to about $150 +/- despite a fairly significant unit price increase over the past 4+ years, but we also have an additional cost of Gas for the past 2 years of about $70 +/- per qtr. Re: Gas vs Electric Heating 24Sep 11, 2014 6:42 pm 223sqm,(living area) smaller than yours. If I had another chance would have gone for a 4kw+, so I could be sure any power we are using on a sunny day is supplied 100% by the system with no importing. Cheers Re: Gas vs Electric Heating 25Sep 11, 2014 10:12 pm That's great to hear. I'd definitely want to go in to this happy to spent a bit more up front if it means better longevity or the ability to expand later. Well I'm pretty comfortable now that I can definitely do all electric with no issues and in the long run it's very likely to be cheaper than gas! Re: Gas vs Electric Heating 26Sep 12, 2014 8:38 am Yes, I think along similar lines knowing what I know now. -Nat gas does have advantages I guess, like BBQ's without having to take the bottle to the servo to refill , etc. -but, turning a tap on, in the hot water position automatically starts our h/w heater but I usually turn off again before the hot water has reached my face !! So a total waste....which I soon worked out. Working on the principal of Solar being a money saver not a money maker can't think why I would bother with gas now. I wish you well with your decision.
