Browse Forums Finishing Touch 1 Apr 11, 2014 10:33 am Does anyone have the problem that when using 3M hooks, whatever you've hung eventually falls down tearing off big flakes of paint with it? I'm at a loss because I don't want to put nails in our walls, so the 3M hooks seemed the logical choice, but now there are huge spots of paintless wall everywhere. Is it because the paint is low quality? Would it help if we had the walls repainted with a better quality brand? Or should we just suck it up and start putting nails into the walls? If the paint has been applied really well and there are no issues with moisture or condensation etc I'm sure they could work but no professional art installer I've ever known has used them. Just painting over it is also unlikely to help, the hooks will only be as strong as the weakest coat of paint. If you've planned out the areas you want to hang in well I'd suggest putting holes in walls and prefer wall mates for plasterboard. For brick or render use a drill and plug. If they're really heavy pieces use an aluminium L bracket at the bottom, it only needs to sit out from the wall about 10mm but you can go wider if its hidden by the frame. This takes the bulk of the weight and the hooks/hanging wire just stop it from falling forward. If you find you often like to move pieces around consider a gallery track system, they are reasonably affordable to get and you can easily do a diy install but the drops and hooks can be a little costly but at least you won't have any holes in your walls. The other alternative that works well for period type homes is to use a picture rail. I will look into wall mates, that's probably our best solution. I cannot find studs behind our plaster walls, so can I simply push some screws straight into plaster and then hang some light weight (eg. canvas) prints?? Or do I always have to find the stud? My signature is distracting people from my wise posts ... Re: 3M hooks taking paint off the walls! 5Apr 13, 2014 4:16 pm Hey Malin, We used these for nearly everything hung in our house (and the last house), the only time we've had trouble is when we didn't use enough of the hooks for the weight of the canvas. One of our biggest ones (I think it's around 1.5mx1.6m) fell off, but no paint was removed - the sticky parts stayed on the wall. So it could just be a weight thing. Lex, depending on the weight you could use plasterboard screws which give you a little extra weight, but I still wouldn't put as much weight as they reckon they can hold. We've used them for some floating shelves, but we're only game to put about 3 dvds on each as one is already slanting a little, but it said they could hold up to 10kg! I would definitely give the 3M hooks a try if you can, our biggest canvas (which is 1.9m long) has been hanging securely for over a year now 1st build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=59376 *New*-2nd build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=70324&p=1154282#p1154282 Re: 3M hooks taking paint off the walls! 6Apr 13, 2014 4:28 pm Lex I use brass picture hooks like these for light pictures; http://www.bunnings.com.au/tic-8kg-bras ... s_p3930114 For heavier stuff it's wallmates (I used a full box of 100 on my last house) The Harder You Try - the Luckier You Get !
