Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Jul 21, 2013 6:34 pm Hi guys, long time lurker first time poster :$ after all the heavy rain fall the last few days I had a leak in my ceiling. Whilst the leak has been fixed I have a wet plasterboard. I went to touch the ceiling and my finger went right through! Before I attempt to repair this was there such thing as asbestos compounds in plaster ceilings from the late 60s/early 70s? Think my home is a 68-70 build. I have a link here (hope that is ok). http://imageshack.com/a/img542/415/cw1e.jpg It's all quite wet atm. It's pretty benign stuff - it used to be made from sugar cane leftovers plus a bit of glue to hold it all together hence the cane-ite name. It's basically a low density fibreboard with reasonably good insulating properties but don't get it wet ! It'll soak up the water like a sponge and turn into weetbix. We used to call it Softboard in NZ but I'm unsure what it was made from over there.
