Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 29, 2012 3:00 pm Hey all, Just designing my dream house, wondering do the building codes require windows in a theatre or pool room? Reason being i am designing it to suit a narrow block and it will be along the boundary behind the garage. Thanks guys Re: Home Theatre / Pool Room 2Sep 30, 2012 1:44 pm Unfortunately All rooms need a window or opening to meet fire saftey standards. We asked our builder if we could brick over our window in our theater after handover but we were told you can get big fines from the local government if they do a on the spot building inspection. Re: Home Theatre / Pool Room 3Sep 30, 2012 2:56 pm If it is a habitable room I do not think you can build on the boundary and not with Windows. There are natural light requirements and they can be provided by one window. I would suggest springing for Double Glazed as it will help with sound leakage. Cheers Mark Re: Home Theatre / Pool Room 4Sep 30, 2012 9:15 pm I wanted the same thing from my theater room. After a lot of research, if my theater was upstairs and depending on sqm it could be classed as a loft ( a non habitable room)... I was told by council and a surveyor that this could be built without windows. I ended up using windows for resale in my 40sqm room. Black vinyl and then black velour solved my issues. Re: Home Theatre / Pool Room 5Oct 02, 2012 8:19 pm I didn't want a window in my theater room either but I was told that it's a requirement that there be windows of a minimum of 10% of the area of the room size in a habitable living space..
Ie My theater room is 4000mm x 4000mm = 16 Square Meters. 10% = 1.6 square meters of window area required. I put in a window size of 600 x 2890 (long narrow window up high) which = 1.734 square meters. Hope this is the info your after.. Edit note : Fixed da mistakes. nice pick up kassan1973 Re: Home Theatre / Pool Room 6Oct 05, 2012 6:41 pm A 4000x4000 room is 16 square meters. A theater room is classed as a habitable room therefore it must have %10 of the floor area for windows and %5 of the floor area must be able to be open for ventilation ie sliding or awning windows. I'm not sure if a rumpus is the same so you may be able to get builder to change classification to a rumpus they should know if a rumpus room is habitable or not.
