Wow, think of how many choices you have of where to post your letters. Thanks for your input. HC Re: half house reno - new light and old lights - LED downlig 11Nov 19, 2012 10:38 am Update: I've found out a whole bunch of stuff. There are many many brands out there competing for your business. Each sparky seems to have a 'favourite' that he works with. Still havent found the "magic sparky" that knows all (and I don't think I'm likely to) so I've done my own reasearch. Out of all the brands out there, beware of two very important things. (1) the specs more often than not state generic color temperatures like 3000k warm white and 5000k cool white. From my experience of buying and testing only 3 different brands I've discovered that 3000K 'aint actually 3000k. Some are yellower and some are whiter. The worst case was a warm white (advertised as 3000k) that was yellower than an incandescent. Just murky; I reckon < 2700K. (2) Everybody loves to say their product is a "True halogen equivalent", yet for these I've found that the lumen output (taking into account the angle or spread as well) varies widely and the lower figures are certainly *not* equivalent to the light output of our current halogen lights. Some claims are just bollocks. We've settled on a brand called M-Elec, which seem to be a good product/color vs price point for our application. Also, If you're in no immediate rush to jump into LED lighting, it seems to be moving very fast and no doubt there will be brighter products, using less energy consumption to be purchased for less money in the near furute. I'd like to have another 12 to 18 months to see what comes up. Hope this helps. HC Re: half house reno - new light and old lights - LED downlig 12Nov 19, 2012 10:56 am As you have found out and one that I tell all my clients , do a lot of homework on any product that you are going to buy - insulation, flooring, heating, lights etc. Don't believe what some work experience salesman tells you. The more educated you are, the better you will be able to make an informed decision that you will not regret later on. I'm now shopping around for LED down light for our new home. We plan to have around 100 led down light so I can't afford for my wrong choice Re: half house reno - new light and old lights - LED downlig 14Nov 19, 2012 11:31 am For some areas, the ML-D15 (http://www.melec.com.au/index.php?id=24) and for other areas the ML-A15 (http://www.melec.com.au/index.php?id=9). Cheers, HC Re: half house reno - new light and old lights - LED downlig 15Nov 19, 2012 11:41 am Thanks a lot HC. If you don't mind, can I ask where did you buy and price? I have recently done some research on: 1) Wattsaver DL7-1400 Dimmable LED Downlight $46 including plug 2) Sunny Lighting Ecolite 12W Daylight Dimmable LED Downlight (S9041DL) Sunny Lighting also $46. Thanks Re: half house reno - new light and old lights - LED downlig 16Nov 19, 2012 12:31 pm Price is around $60 a unit (includes light and transformer). Exact price I'm note sure 'cause my better half grabbed it on the way to work! I'd suggest you'd be doing a better price if you were buying in large quantities. Wattsaver and Sunny lighting! Ha, yes we're all travelling the same road. I know these products well. Yes, they are slightly cheaper than the M-elec.
