Browse Forums Landscape & Garden Design 1 Jun 04, 2012 3:28 pm Hi Guys, we have a retaining wall with around 11 piers, distance between piers is around 1.9m and they are 1.5m high. Id like to do some timber slats in between with a preference to stain them in a charcoal colour to math the rest of the wood we have inside the house. What is the best way of doing this, can you get timber or aluminium u channels to slide the timber (decking) into and then drill them in? any advice would be great, was thinking of using treated pine. cheers Re: slat fencing inbetween piers . Advice needed 2Jun 04, 2012 3:40 pm Normally for timber slats, fix a vertical timber batten to the pier then screw on horizontals to that. 1900mm span would require a intermediate vertical support in the panel Landscape Design & Construction http://cherub.squarespace.com/ Re: slat fencing inbetween piers . Advice needed 3Jun 04, 2012 4:15 pm with the intermediate vertical support, does this just need to be screwed to the slats. The base of the support doesn't have to be bolted down? Would treated pine be ideal to use? Re: slat fencing inbetween piers . Advice needed 4Jun 04, 2012 5:23 pm Intermediate support can be same as slats and screwed to the horizontals. It's there to help reduce warping, no need to bolt to masonry. Would use treated pine decking as last resort. Screening timbers 42mm wide hardwood are a better option, will stay straighter. Advice needed 5Jun 06, 2012 4:44 pm cool, i also noticed that treated pine has smooth/grooved finish... are you able to get smooth/smooth finish? What would be the next step up from treated pine, something that can be stained in a charcoal colour. Re: slat fencing inbetween piers . Advice needed 6Jun 06, 2012 10:20 pm Next step up from Treated pine is Cypress pine, then on to hardwoods. (Cypress is rated F5 and hardwoods start at F11 I think) You want unreeded timber for smooth both sides, just ask for unreeded treated pine decking The color you want will have to come from a stain and since treated pine usually goes greyish it would probably be the easiest to get to a charcoal color. Cheapest too Re: slat fencing inbetween piers .
