Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jun 03, 2012 12:15 am Hey guys just wondering if anyone out there has had any experiences using Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs). We are talking to Architect about possibly using them on our build. From what I have read they are pretty common in Europe and US but fairly new in Aust. http://www.sipsindustries.com.au/home.php Benifits said to include speed of installation on site, lightweight construction and high R energy rating. My concerns include termite resistance (building on a bush block) and experience of local (Perth) builders/manufactures. Cost of material apparently on par with brick/blocks but possible $ saved in build time. Electrical and data is all pre chased into the walls in the factory so I imagine it would be a messy and costly job to install a data point in the future. Any other issues I should consider? Re: Anyone had experience building with SIPs 2Jun 05, 2012 8:30 pm Hi Brookview, good luck with the planning. We have been researching SIPS over the last few years as we get ready to start our plans. There is a long thread on this topic at ; viewtopic.php?f=2&t=45111 Also on the Alternative Technology Association website at; http://www.ata.org.au/forums/topic/23 and http://www.ata.org.au/forums/topic/2195 and a little at http://www.ata.org.au/forums/topic/3390 That is probably a good start. There are also a few members on the ATA website that have used SIPS in WA including OwnerBuilder on ATA forum topic /2195 - see 2nd Oct 2011 Good luck - theres a bit of reading there! Re: Anyone had experience building with SIPs 4Sep 18, 2012 12:48 am We have just submitted our plans to the council for a Colorbond steel clad, SIPs built house. We will be going owner builder as we couldnt find a builder that wishes to take on the project as we foresee it. That is fine with us. We intend using internal walls of MgO/polyurethane sitting within a basic 135m2 Colorbond shed by Widespan Shed.
