Interesting idea for the garage, ours isn't insulated and gets steaming ...will definately look into that. Re: Decreasing roof temp to assist a/c 4Jan 15, 2012 10:42 am What about a solarVenti? We've had one installed and to be honest it doesn't make a great difference to the room temperature but apparantely it makes A/C much more efficient. So will be interesting to see when we get the A/C installed. You can look at info at ges.com.au The guy who installed it said it's more than 10 times the effectiveness of whirlybirds. Re: Decreasing roof temp to assist a/c 9Jan 17, 2012 7:31 pm Althom Expensive and not very environmentally friendly way to reduce the temp in your roof space. Upfront yes, but if you look at TCO, then it's actually positive. If you use less efficient panels, they are cheaper, and cover a larger surface area, so pay back time is shorter. For most system, say for 4kW (which I have done the sums for), the payback time is about 10-12 years (using a figure of $1000 to $1200 actual generation payback per year), then you have the other 13-15 years of expected lifespan of solar panels to earn you passive income. This is also assuming electricity prices stay the same for the next 25 years, and no carbon tax. As far as environmentally friendly, there is an initial cost, much like anything else including plastics (drill for oil, refine it, etc), but long term-wise, you will be part of the solution as cheap energy sources decline. Welll, you could then run a split system in your roof cavity with the electricity you produce..... That'd keep your roof temperatures lower than any whirlybird or e-vent could! Re: Decreasing roof temp to assist a/c 11Feb 29, 2012 1:20 pm Hi, we are looking at reducing our roof temp too. Have just order 4 smoothline ventilators (2 sets of 2) for our colourbond Dune roof. Will post when we have installed them and advise their effectiveness. http://universaltileventilators.com.au/ ... -vent.html Re: Decreasing roof temp to assist a/c 12Mar 13, 2012 4:17 pm So far, so good ... My husband installed them on the weekend. We have all commented that it definitely feels cooler upstairs, especially the night time, seems to cool down a lot quicker than before. Our upstairs is noticeably cooler. This doesn't make much difference... I have a north facing roof with solar panels and the radiant heat still comes through on a summers day. 2 9385 This certainly doesn't look good. I would be engaging with an independent inspector to have a look at this.
