Specifically, I'm purchasing a house that has recently been done with a limestone look render that has had a pattern set into it to make it look like double course limestone bricks. I much prefer the look of a flat render that can be painted. Would it simply be a matter of getting someone to apply another layer of render? New beginnings. Re: Rendering over render? 2Dec 07, 2011 11:27 am Personally I wouldn't render a coat of sand/cement plaster over another but I am a bit cautious about doing this sort of thing. Kind of like installing a new ceiling over an old one. If you render again with sand/cement then the total thickness of the two coats would be 25 - 40mm , which is pretty thick. I'd look at using one of the newer acrylic renders that have lots of expandability and are only a couple of mm thick. If the existing render is plastered on really well then the new one should stick to it easily.
