Browse Forums General Discussion 1 Sep 30, 2011 3:37 pm Hi All, I am just wondering if anyone could tell me or show me what a broadband tower looks like and if there are any health risks involved with having one close to your house. We are on a farm and they want to put a tower on our property a short distance from our house. I am not keen at all, but my DH, BIL & FIL all think it's ok. Do they make any noise? If anyone had a photo that would be great. Thanks. Re: Broadband Tower on property 2Sep 30, 2011 4:28 pm It's not like high tension power lines, there should be no issue with them apart from the visual impact. Are they planning to pay you ? I know people here in SA get $15,000 per year for each and every wind tower that goes up, maybe they do something the same with Telstra towers ? Re: Broadband Tower on property 3Sep 30, 2011 4:33 pm Here is some spin from vodaphone on wireless base stations
http://www.vodafone.com.au/personal/aboutvodafone/healthmobilephonetechnology/faqs/index.htm Generally if something is broadcasting radio waves you are absorbing that RF to some degree. When you hold a mobile phone to your head it is transmitting a signal right next to your head. A mobile base station does the same thing at much higher power. It is certainly not adviseable to stand directly in front of one when its operating but the strength drops off significantly once you are at ground level or say 20m away. Chances are it will actually be transmitting straight over you house and you won't likely be in the path of the transmission anyway. There are radio waves beign transmitted virtually everywhere you go but no one can say for 100% certain that they have zero effect. I'd be more concerned about the devaluation it will have on your house however if you refuse it may just end up next door to your property anyway. I've heard that they can compenstate around 10k per year to have these on you land so that would certainly be a positive. As far as appearance goes the panels are basically the same as used for mobile phone which you will see on building roofs and towers everywhere. The wireless broadband is transmitted over the mobile 3G & 4G networks. Usually its a pole (say 300-400mm diameter) with 1-3 panels at the top. Some of the bigger arrays can have alot more panels. Here is a pic of a small pole with one panel and a microwave antenna mounted below (panels are say 1.2m x 300mm) Here is a much larger array for transmitting to a wider area with around 12 panels on it. General consensus seems to be that there is very little evidence for any direct health risks. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_pho ... and_health How much do they compensate you for allowing them to install one?
