Browse Forums Paving & Concreting 1 Sep 26, 2011 4:06 pm I had a coloured concrete (through colour) done a year and a half ago. In that time the top has worn away to reveal the aggregate. In some areas there are small stone sized pieces coming out of it and in two areas (where the cars are driven) ruts are developing in it. The concretor came and looked and said it was normal and would be fixed by "colour sealing", whatever that is. I thought when I ordered a coloured driveway the colour would be permanent and the surface wouldn't wear off the second year. Thanks for any opinions. Re: Coloured concrete driveway flaking 2Sep 26, 2011 4:55 pm If you post pictures it will help for those that know so they can offer some help. From your post, it kind of sounds like the concrete mix wasn't what it should be. Very hard to make any diagnosis with out pics though. Re: Coloured concrete driveway flaking 3Sep 26, 2011 9:37 pm I have a feeling with the stone exposed as you have described the only solution may be grinding the soft surface and using a densifier to harden the surface, post up some photos if you can. Re: Coloured concrete driveway flaking 4Sep 28, 2011 9:26 pm causes of this problem are : 1.concrete finished to early with stipple trowel 2.broom finish (wears off quickly) 2.excessive water added into conc. truck pre-pour 3.to low MPa strength 4.poor quality conc. supplied (crappy sand and cheap cement) 5.surface not worked enough (lack of mag float / wood float and steel trowel) (the more your work the surface the harder it gets) 6.water added to surface manually when finish was done to get a slurry for finish 7.conc. got rained on to early to fix. 1.pull it up and do it again 2.grind and seal 3.soda blast and seal 4.spray pave 5.pave over it 6.live with it Da Vinci Outdoor Living Architectural landscaping http://www.davincioutdoor.com Re: Coloured concrete driveway flaking 7Jun 06, 2012 11:33 pm Well we were finally told by the concrete supplier that the concrete was fine and it was the concretor's fault. (They would say that wouldn't they?) The concretor then said he would fix it by putting on a Master Coat. I thought he meant a coat of concrete, but what he did was spray on a hardener and then roll on some "colour seal" stuff which looked just like paving paint. Only after the job wasfinished was I told I would have to apply it again every two years! Since I had paid for "colour thru" colour which would last a lifetime I was disappointed in that. However the real disappointment has come 3 weeks later as the colour is now peeling off in patches all over the driveway. I was told by the concretor's son (the concretor doesn't seem to want to talk to me) that it was peeling off because we were driving over gum nuts and leaves that had fallen from a tree!!!! I asked him just how stupid he thought I was. I really don't know where to go next with this. I not only have a driveway constantly shedding sand and little chunks of concrete, and forming tyre ruts, and one where the blue metal is showing through, but also one with a coloured surface which is progressively flaking off to form a mottled mess. I would really like the opinion of an expert (not employed by the supplier this time) as to what went wrong and what is the wisest thing to do. Any suggestions gratefully considered. Re: Coloured concrete driveway flaking 9Jun 23, 2012 12:33 pm wool being pulled over your eyes jassy , colour thru is an oxide placed internally in the concrete mix design in the yard . Without it being sealed it will only last 3 months before it fades and Colour thru isnt guaranteed the colour you want anyways . Yes unfortunatly you will have to seal it every 2 years thanks to the UV factor , nothing last long in our UV unfortunatly . The Densifier should hardned up the surface and i hope you contractor bothered to remove the denisifer residue before applying the sealer otherwise it will delaminate before the UV nails it , Solvent or water based sealer ? reason i ask is that a lot of sealers require to be removed before maintenance coats every 2 years which gets pricey for removal which is why you see a lot of stamped concrete with patchey sealer everywhere Re: Coloured concrete driveway flaking 11Aug 30, 2013 5:06 pm Getjason is right. The contractor probably didn't do the right steps after the Densifier and applying the sealing, resulting in sealer delamination. You shouldn't have to live with it Jassy. You paid for a service that I'm sure was quite expensive. One thing you can do is resurface it with Polymer concrete overlay integrally coloured. Our overlays have an 80mpa compression strength that will easily handle car traffic and gum nuts For pictures check out http://www.cleaningandsealing.com.au/co ... surfacing/ When you get a chance watch the last couple of videos. The cracks are pretty bad, it's almost as though he hasn't put any reo in that corner and hasn't compacted/levelled… 2 3358 To my understanding early saw cuts are to control shrinkage cracks, so doing them now would be pointless. Control joints may reduce ugly cracking during periods of soil… 3 7383 Hi all I need a guidance on how far I need to space expansion joints in the concrete driveway and its type (keyway/foam.) Contraction joints are at 3m max for a 125 slab. Thanks 0 9073 |
