BEFORE: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We did the overhead cabinets before moving on to the desk area. We originally went to buy the Flatpax overhead cabinets same as the laundry, but turns out Bunnings is phasing them out and they didn't have any left on the shelf. POO. So we had to order all the separate pieces of the Kaboodle brand. A week later, they arrived and Dave picked them up and assembled them. Luckily he was off work for three weeks at the time, so he spent two days measuring and installing them. We decided to have four cupboards with doors and have two being open. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I ordered the two side-drawers and the mini filing cabinet from a local office supply store. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We had the benchtop special ordered from Bunnings through Kaboodle, which was a drama in itself. They didn't get me to sign the order form when I did it and paid for it, so they called me to come back half an hour later and sign it - which I did. Two weeks later, I called to follow up. They told me the order hadn't been even processed by Kaboodle because the form wasn't signed. I had a bit of a hissy fit at this point as the lady I'd gone back to sign the form with had obviously lost it and hadn't sent it off. So I had to go back AGAIN to re-sign it and get them to send it off. After another 2 weeks, I called again and left a message for someone to follow the order up and let me know. No answer. I left five messages with five different people over three days, none of whom called me back. I eventually went into the store and cried like a baby to the front door manager, who gave me a hug and agreed that it was terrible service. In the end, it took another week to come in. I called at 3pm in the afternoon one day, and the very bored-sounding guy on the phone told me the order had arrived the day before. No apology for not calling or letting me know. Dave had to go pick it up (bit of a dramatic event for a 3.6m long benchtop that was built into a wooden crate) but managed to get it home. He got his Dad to help him carry it in and place it on top of the drawers. However, the side drawers were about 5cm shorter than the benchtop so Dave cut apart the pieces of the crate the benchtop came in, then constructed a square shape to fit in the gap and prop the benchtop up. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Then Dave bought some white melamine board and constructed a backboard under the bench with a lockable lift-up flap. The idea is that the CPU's sit behind the backboard and the cables are run up through holes in the benchtop. This means that the CPU is never visible and all there is on the benchtop is the computer screen. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So at the moment, it's looking like this (and it's amazing - both chairs sit by side AND my dog's bed even fits between us!) and I love that we each have so much room. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Things still yet to be done; - Insert of air vents/fans behind the backboard and along the back of the benchtop to allow air flow around the CPU's. - Fixing the benchtop to the drawers/filing cabinet, and then fixing all of it to the wall (at the moment, it's just sitting on the drawers propping each other up). - Inserting powerpoints on the back of the benchtop so that the cords for the above-bench items are plugged directly into them, rather than cords running through a hole. - Power buttons for the CPU's being extended and fitted on the front of the home-made square shapes above the drawers. So when the computers are turned off, we can turn them on again easily without having to crawl behind the backboard on the floor. - Possibly the disc drive being re-fitted to the front of the square shape as well, to allow discs to be used without, once again, crawling around on the floor... etc. - Under-cupboard lighting (downlights) along under the overhead cabinets, right above the benchtop. ___ Dave also installed our fancy light fitting in the dining area so pretty! So cute!!! Does she shed much hair? Can I ask where you got your flat pack stuff? And was it hard to put together? Your DIY stuff looks amazing! Re: Building the Sorrento by Scott Park Homes 1446Oct 24, 2013 4:52 pm She's adorable she is quite hairy but doesn't shed too much. No more then my cat. I do vacuum every day but having three hairy animals kind of requires me to The flat packs for the laundry were Flatpax items (Bunnings) and the overhead cabinets in the study are Kaboodle brand (also from Bunnings). Kaboodle seem actually really nice, it's just that you have to buy the individual pieces (eg cupboards are always open, doors and hinges and handles sold separately). Thank you, we are very proud of our DIY my hubby's DIY, anyway, haha. Re: Building the Sorrento by Scott Park Homes 1447Oct 24, 2013 10:30 pm Looking amazing!! Re: Building the Sorrento by Scott Park Homes 1450Oct 27, 2013 7:18 pm What they said...great storage and home office area with the overheads. What a drama with Bunnings! (Reminds me of my Telstra dramas when we moved, I won't go there ) And go Dave, good job as usual!! Can't believe Sansa is a year old already... Re: Building the Sorrento by Scott Park Homes 1451Nov 03, 2013 11:43 am Thank you everyone it would have been a lot easier, of course, to get everything done with the build so the house was finished, but I am continually glad that we kept the mortgage as low as possible - even though it has been over a year now and we still have projects to go (reshape the driveway and finish paving it, and also fit out the WIR), I am satisfied with the work my partner has done putting himself into the house. A lot of satisfaction for him as well, to complete jobs he'd never tried before. Doing it all to your own home (our first home) has been really lovely to do Re: Building the Sorrento by Scott Park Homes 1452Mar 02, 2014 10:48 am Sansa is stunning. Study is incredible, amazing DIY skills. Good to see you are both still accomplishing house tasks, and love that you are keeping us up to date! Gosh a year went by quick, didn't it. When we bought our block, there was an existing council crossover in place. Horrible red bricks. And because it was already there and that was the side we had to put our driveway, therefore the driveway had to 'connect' with it. So what we got was a twisty angled driveway. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So we did our own paving down the sides of the house and along the back, and decided to leave the driveway until last since it was going to be expensive and horrifically time-consuming. In the end, we decided to hire someone else to do it (a professional contractor) cos there was no way we had the time or expertise to do it properly ourselves. We saved up and pinched every penny until now and finally were able to get it done. So here is a 'before' photo of when we had just had the lawns put in (hence they are so green and pretty!!). The ditches of sand either side of the twisty driveway have driven me nuts for 18 months! Every time I backed my car out (from the right hand side), my car would tilt down into the ditch. And over time, the sand receded and it got lower and lower....argh! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And here are the photos of us pulling up the crossover (which we did ourselves and oh god, such tiring work!) and then the driveway being done. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ We got to here and then ran out of pavers ARGH! My bad for not adding correctly. Had to re-order another two packs and waited 5 days for delivery before the contractor could come back and start again. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Dave and I also decided that we wanted a pattern down the side of the driveway where it leads up the side gate - just to create a distinction between the two sections (one for the side and one for the drive up to the garage). I am very pleased we decided to, because it looks great and really breaks up the monotonous grey sea! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So once the pavers were finished and compacted and the sides were cemented in, we finally have a complete driveway. It's beautiful and amazingly HUGE! Fits 3 cars side by side! I am in love and so pleased. Please ignore the piles of yellow sand that are leftover I am going to top dress the brownish parts of our lawn with it... (it's pressure mounted so easily removable with no damage). It's a really fun (and hard!) pastime! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Sansa is now almost 18 months old and is as cute as ever. I pick up Zoe tomorrow morning and I am super excited! Thanks LeanneR, I agree not driving in ditches makes me uber happy. Roman Cobble isn't bad, I suggest going to see the actual samples at Atlas Paving before making any decisions... we did and I ended up changing my mind completely cos the original colours weren't what I wanted. And even then, the border ones we have are 'mocha' but they look purple to me Re: Building the Sorrento by Scott Park Homes 1460Apr 10, 2014 9:23 pm How's Zoe settling in?
