I thought manmade engineered stone contained quartz? Marble is not recommended for kitchen surfaces due to it's porosity (sp?) - most kitchen designers recommend granite or engineered surfaces for this reason. I have heard of staining due to food / oil spills however was led to believe that Gumption would remove most minor scratches or staining from engineered stone (according to my stonemason). Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Refinishing Stone Benchtops 7Sep 26, 2011 1:41 pm Like Kyton I thought engineered stone contained quartz...at least that's what it looks like in my Caesarstone benches, then again different colours would probably have a different stone mix. Sorry Helmut I'm not much help but haven't heard of needing to be re-sanded/polished on a regular basis, also $950 sounds a bit much every 2 years! CC...There is a risk of scratches/marks/etc on any bench you just have to be mindful of not putting something on the bench and 'sliding' it to where it want as most likely there will be sand etc underneath to cause a scratch. While I can't comment on EssaStone I know that Caesarstone send a sample bottle of their cleaner and a Scotchbrite once you have submitted your benchtop warranty details. The Scotchbrite is available in Coles (maybe other supermarkets but I noticed them at Coles) and the liquid cleanser/polisher is available through your Caesarstone dealer or direct from the company. The tilers who did the splashback recently made a BIG mess of the CS with the chocolate coloured grout, of course they didn't care and just walked off and left me to deal with the stain. Fortunately CS had sent the small bottle of their cleaner as it removed all the stains after 2 or 3 applications. Of course, if you have really bad scratches the stonemason can come back and re-polish the bench and hopefully remove deep scratches, I have no idea what the cost would be.
