Browse Forums Bathrooms and Laundry Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 3Jun 27, 2011 11:06 am It sounds a lot like what we have although our glass is 1800mm tall (edited: oops, I see now it is nothing like what we have! ). Ours is plain glass as I wanted the bathroom to look bigger as it is quite tiny. It was difficult to photograph with my phone but the post you see goes to the ceiling and there is a discreet frame along the floor and wall but no frame along the top. I just did a quick measure of our glass thickness and it is 6 or 7mm. Our builder didn't say it was particularly expensive, which he was quick to point out with other things that I asked for. We have the hob on the floor and the post to the ceiling as this is a bathroom that will be used mainly by our kids so I wanted it to be pretty robust and reasonably flood-proof. Although since we chose our fittings, I've noticed Raleighfarm has a glass screen with no frame or post and she has lots of kids (and boys at that!) so maybe that was overkill on my part. Why do you want the glass to extend all the way to the ceiling? Aah - sorry - reading your post again I see I misinterpreted what you meant by the u-channel! I'm guessing now that the discreet framing I was talking about along our floor is what you want at top and bottom with no post? Sorry - but perhaps seeing ours gives you an idea of alternatives! Kylie Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 4Jun 27, 2011 5:26 pm sceen7 .....the piece of glass will have to be a 12mm thick laminate measuring a whopping 2.6m high and 2m wide. : Now I have a few questions : A am i mad : The wife wants a slumped glass to top it all off so i would love to hear from anyone that has glass expertise. 1) Yes you are mad. Hope that helps, P_D ___________________________________________ (Oh wait...You wanted more !!! ) IMHO, Laminated glass should never be used in wet areas, water DOES get in between the layers, and after a few years mould grows INSIDE the glass which of course you can never clean / remove / tackle !! HOWEVER....Sounds like an awesome idea, talk to people who know about these things and see if there is a different sort of glass you can use for this sort of application, our pool fence is 10mm toughened glass, and it's seen two kids and their friends grow up with no problems, soccer balls / tennis balls kids running and falling against it haven't caused it any grief !! Logistically you might need some "lateral thinking", how would the builder physically get a large sheet of glass into place, that is, in the front door, up the hall, and around the bathroom doors and then stand it upright ? Does your house plan allow this to actually happen ? As to cost, what's your house costing you ? (Rhetorical question ) .................. Say $200,000 and lets go wild and say this shower is going to cost you $5,000, That's bugger-all in the scheme, so if this is something you're busting to do, then GO FOR IT !! You'll kick yourself every day that you use the shower wishing you had spent the extra $$'s if you don't do it !!! Cheers, P_D (What's slumped glass BTW ??) . We were told 10mm toughened glass is the best option to go with Custom European Cabinets - Melbourne Kitchen Specialist PM for business details as website currently being updated! Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 11Jun 27, 2011 9:17 pm Bam .....We were told 10mm toughened glass is the best option to go with That sounds about right, as I said above, that is what our pool-fence is, and that's coped with two kids growing up ! Be really interested in finding out the cost of some of these options, and FWIW it might be cheaper then you think !! Just had a quick Google for "10mm glass" and one of the first results was from a DIY glass pool fence mob !! I was stunningly surprised at just how expensive they weren't !! 10mm * 1200mm * 1600mm = $145.00 I'm not sure how dear I thought glass was, but that is a fair sized piece of glass and it was a lot cheaper then I might of guessed !!! http://www.diyglassfencing.com.au/categ ... cID=15&p=4 * P_D *Standard disclaimer . I expected that. As for the pool fencing idea, I guess they are much cheaper because its a more standard/ mass produced product. This is a custom job so I guess thats why i'll pay more. I just cant see why glass costs so much....it isnt like we are running out of sand. I will probably post how i end up in my other thread as im sort of starting my build now so lots going on. Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 13Jul 04, 2011 12:01 pm Oh hi! Haha, we want to do something very similar.
Our quote was around 2k also. We are chasing 1910mm wide by 2000mm high (there was two hundred dollars difference between 10mm and 12mm glass). The biggest issue is getting it into the house. I was thinking about going to the ceiling, then I remembered the height of our door frames. Ive sent about 8 enquiries, had 3 responses. 2 said that it could be done, and one said seriously doubted that anyone who said they would do it has adequate knowledge of saftey. Our builder will do a semi framed one that is 1500 mm wide, by 2000mm high which is too small for what we are trying to do. They did suggest putting in a 410mm wall to make up the difference :/ What state are you in? Maybe we can share our findings? Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 14Jul 04, 2011 12:08 pm Alas we are in Melbourne and yes getting it inplace is a bit tricky for us too. As far as safety goes, I would think anyone who can produce such a large piece of glass knows how to handle it. There are much larger pieces of glass on most public buildings today so I have no doubt it can be done, anything can be done .....for a price lol Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 15Jul 04, 2011 12:11 pm Sorry off the subject but has anyone heard of doing something like this but smaller to install in a niche? We have two niches and I think slumped glass would look awesome if we were able to hang it in there. Any views?? Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 16Jul 04, 2011 12:35 pm sceen7 I have no doubt it can be done, anything can be done .....for a price lol Haha indeed, just got my 3rd quote through $3800, 12mm glass and it needs some sort of support on the open end Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 17Jul 04, 2011 1:16 pm Mmmm, don't know where my last reply went, but here goes again........ When I was in Bunnings last week (recently opened store in my area) I looked at the walk-in shower panels and was absolutely amazed at the price ticket of $285!!! Only wish I had checked them prior to having 2 x semi frameless screens in the new house (builder supplied) because there has been no end of problems, partly (imho) due to incorrect measuring in the first place and now they are trying to rectify their faults. Walk-in showers are top of my list next time, no moving parts and only one pane of glass to be fitted...surely this must mean less chance of making mistakes!! On second thoughts...my builder's team could stuff anything up!! LOL Re: LARGE glass panel for walk in shower 20Jul 04, 2011 2:41 pm I would still be happy to pay$285,much cheaper than shower companies Electrical just got back to me and said the most they can provide is a single power point on the Bedroom 1 side of that wall.
