Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Mar 11, 2011 5:59 pm Hi all, I tried searching but didn't come up with much info on how to tiles an outdoor room (Alfresco). We are unsure on if we should tile it (with concrete slab), deck it (maybe too expensive) or use some sort of slate/stone tiles. Question is, how much approximately do all of these things cost. And is it possible to use a slate/stone tile on a bed of sand instead of a concrete slab. The outdoor room is approx 15sq m. Thanks for your help Re: Outdoor room tiling 2Mar 11, 2011 7:35 pm I think (think, meaning not sure) that the paver shouldn't be thinner than 3cm without having a slab underneath. You can definitely use one of the numerous various pavers, all are at least 4cm thick, some more. If you want to keep the cost down, pavers on roadbase+sand should be cheaper. But, if you are after a "cleaner" look, then perhaps tile it (over a slab). Obviously, pavers would perform better on a slab too, but I can't see the economies of laying pavers over a concrete base. Re: Outdoor room tiling 3Mar 11, 2011 7:56 pm we are tiling our alfresco, We are having the same tiles inside the house as in the alfresco but there slightly different texture (got grip on it) We have had timber decks before and the maintenance was a pain, It was really an easy decision as what ever we had inside was going to be the same outside and also having the timber floorboards again i knew we didnt want them again. Does anyone have an idea of rough costs to get concrete? We may have around 40 sqm. at the back partially under an alfresco roof and remaning uncovered. ------------------------------------------------------- http://homeinkalina.blogspot.com Enjoying our new Concerto with Allworth Homes in Kalina, The Ponds Handover - 28/06/2011 Re: Outdoor room tiling 6May 05, 2011 10:19 pm Hey guys, what would be the cost to lay outdoor tiles on a plain concrete slab? It's very common to pave over a slab. We had an extra area concreted and tied to the existing alfresco slab before our pavers were laid over the lot. A sand and cement base moves over time and you end up with a horrible uneven surface. Personally, I don't like tiles for outdoor areas - I prefer natural stone (or a concrete paver that looks like a natural material), or decking. But of course, the choice of material comes down to personal taste. Re: Outdoor room tiling 8May 10, 2011 10:11 pm I went to a couple of factory tile outlets and noticed decent outdoor tiles @ $20 per sq mtr. I was thinking of getting tiling done by a pro but seeing the video on bunning's website, I would like to have a crack at it myself as I believe if no screed is required and concrete slab is flat, then tiling should be a manageable job. However, most pavers are in the range of $50-80 per sq mtr and hence makes it much more expensive. Would $40-50 per sq mtr be reasonable to assume a professional tiler to take? ------------------------------------------------------- http://homeinkalina.blogspot.com Enjoying our new Concerto with Allworth Homes in Kalina, The Ponds Handover - 28/06/2011 Re: Outdoor room tiling 9Jun 10, 2011 8:41 pm i am on the same dillemma and can't decided whether to go decks or pavers on our alfresco area that's already slabbed as part of the house (only lower). but now, tiling is also in the mix Oxford 22 @ Stage12a Point Cook Site Cut : 05/03/2010 Slab Pour : 24/03/2010 Frame Inspected : 06/04/2010 Pre-plaster Inspection: 22/04/2010 PCI: 16/07/2010 Final Inspection: 30/07/2010 Landscaping: who knows???
