To give a bit of a history lesson (to anyone that cares to listen! ), Art Deco is basically everything Interwar. It was never an exclusive architectural design; it constantly morphed. Rather, it was an era that encompassed the design of the time. True Art Deco buildings, such as the Empire State and Chrysler buildings in NYC, had a focus on vertical accents and decorative motifs. The slightly later offshoot of Streamlined Moderne (rounded corners) focussed on horizontal lines, such as 'eyebrow' window overhangs, and sometimes portholes. The California Bungalow style of house, recognisable by a front porch supported by tapering brick or rendered columns, was the design of choice in the 30's, and had zero Art Deco influence in its actual facade! But, true to form, its original internals would no doubt have featured wood panelling, suspended light fittings, picture rails, pedestal basins, decorative plaster etc. Geoff - Decophile. Re: Modernising an Old Girl - Ceilings going in 138May 12, 2012 12:08 am Well my Ceiling guys are almost done and dusted. (I think I have the slowest Ceiling fixers in Australia working for me) They have done a great job but they but don't like to go too fast on things. A Full day in their book is start around 8am and finished by about 1pm. (Luckily they are not on a day rate!) But in all honesty very very happy with the quality of workmanship, just wish they had the energy to get 8 hours in a day rather than 5! I'd post some photos of progress but my Phone decided to die on me last week so I've been living with a 5 year old brick in my pocket. (New phone due next week so should have something to show soon.) We are just finishing up installing the last few picture rails and plaster vents on the walls then it will be time to drag out the Spray gun and get some serious painting underway. I have about a 10 day window to seal the walls with sealer binder, undercoat and apply the final paint to the ceiling and also paint all the joinery frames. Then my Fixing carpenter will be arriving to install all the last doors, bi-folds etc so I can get the Glaziers in and "lock 'er up" The last 2 weeks has also been spent pulling my hair out sorting out Door hardware. It's been the first real "decorative decision" we have had to make on the fly (Near on everything else we decided prior to the build). I really didn't realise how many doors we had in the house. All up it's 36 doors needing to be sorted including wardrobes, storerooms etc. So that's 108 sets of hinges, 36 varying sets of Levers or handles and so it goes on with locks latches and mortices. Not to mention all the window hardware that needs to go on top of that. I've learnt a lot about door and window hardware and also learnt these hardware suppliers have a licence to print money! Still what do you do? Anyway till next time happy building https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Modernising an Old Girl - Ceilings going in 139May 14, 2012 7:14 pm Time to vent - Had my first blow up with a Tradie today. Last day of my ceiling guys being on site and when I pointed out something they had missed he went off his rocker (and I responded in kind) Went on for a good 5 - 10 minutes of yelling at each other and not a good way to end a job. 6 hours later I'm still stewing on it and not happy. They finished (most) of what they had to do but just angry it came to that. I try and be pretty fair but sometimes you just gotta stand up for yourself. Anyway he put his last invoice for payment in tonight. I wasnt going to "backcharge" him for $200 worth of Cornice he damaged (which resulted in me having to buy in more at my cost) But now I'm not so sure. Treat me like crap and I respond in kind. Spose I should just sit on it till morning but at the moment..... https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Re: Modernising an Old Girl - Ceilings complete 140May 22, 2012 10:22 pm Well Ceilings and Panels have all been completed last week. Plaster on the walls had also had time to dry nicely so it was time to Seal them last weekend. I learnt three very important lessons last week. 1 - Spraying paint upwards towards a ceiling, no matter how well intentioned I was to get all that paint onto the ceiling, the laws of gravity can not be broken and some paint will in fact fall back down towards the ground. Coating ones face in the process (and causing eyelashes to want to stick together) 2 - Using Oil based paint that falls back to earth via your face will mean you need to use Turps to get that paint off your face. (Ouch!) 3- You can not get Turps too close to your eyes to get Oil based paint off your eyelids so you are left looking like an idiot for a while Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Panel over Dining area. Sort of looks like Empire State Building at the peaks. Picture rails and wall vents also installed to match what was in original parts of the house. The "Beading" around the panel really makes it look impresive. This has just been sprayed with Sealer (See lessons learnt above) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Entrance Hallway panels and beading Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Silly man with white paint around his eyes! (See lessons 1, 2 and 3 above) Moving forward..... Friday joiners arrive to fit all the external doors / bi-folds etc. Renderer on site today and tomorrow to float the external sections of house. (Texture coat wotn be applied till near the end) Once I have painted all the joinery in a week or 2, the Glazers will be in and and we are at Lockup. https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=44762 My Owner builder journey extending a 1930's Bungalow Is it possible to render an old corrugated iron shed.I have heard that it can be done if it is covered with chicken wire first. Not sure of the ratio of the render mix and… 0 4896 Thanks Chippy,I do have one that I levered out.
