One of the houses under construction for a builder I work for in an up-market part of Brisbane has this. The over head cupboards have little trap doors to access the lights to change the globes. There is a variety of different lighting options to illuminate the splashbacks. Fluorescent light was used because of the large area the light had to cover and fluro's spread the light evenly. If you were doing on a smaller scale in a normal house you could use halogen lights or even possibly LED.
