Browse Forums Flooring & Floor Covering 1 Nov 09, 2010 6:50 pm Hey guys... We bought 600x600 porcelain tiles to be laid in our soon-to-be new house... it'll have the minimum grout at 1.50mm and they are off white colour..polished I've got a 8 month old Japanese Shiba living in and out of the house... When we go to work, we leave him at the back yard (will be mainly decked and bit of lawn) and when we're home, I'd prefer him to be inside of the house.... But one thing strikes me....would he dirty the grout so quick and easy? He gets so dirty now as it's all sand at the current house, but hoping that this will improve once we do the decking and etc current house is jarrah floor so no problem here, but once we lay the beautiful polished porcelain I don't know whether I wanna let him in the house.. I tried those little shoes for doggy but he just hates it Any ideas???? or experiences...will be greatly appreciated! Bonus puppy piccies! I had tiles (not porcelain though) in my last place, and I found it wasn't the dirt brought in by the dogs which dirtied the grout - it was me mopping the dirt into the floor. That is, a wet mop turned the sand/dust into dirt and pushed it into the grout. Sweeping your floor clean before you wash it should help as it would keep the dirt dry and shouldn't get into the grout so much. I have gone for very dark tiles in my reno this time, as I just got so sick of cleaning cream tiles all the time! And I doubt I'll sweep before mopping these ones either Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 3Nov 09, 2010 8:15 pm Thanks for your input I hope our pup doesn't come in with wet feet with all the dirt haha thinking of buying a roomba and scooba for that reason apparently scooba only uses clean water to mop each run....so hopefully that helps all these worries with tile flooring.... Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 4Nov 10, 2010 1:50 pm Aww, what a cutie! How can you not let him inside to snuggle?? The scooba is great, especially if you vacuum first to get rid of most of the hair, etc. If you have light coloured grout I reckon it will get dirty sooner or later - dogs or no dogs. If this concerns you maybe have a look at getting it epoxied to seal it. Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 5Nov 10, 2010 2:06 pm Thanks for the compliment. He's sooooo cute I thought about sealing the grout, but tile shop told us it doesn't really solve the problem 100%, and sometimes it's waste of money but she said we could get it sealed and do DIY jobs so that it wont be too exxy? Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 6Nov 10, 2010 2:29 pm I have very light grey grout,I vac first then clean with a damp mop not wet.Try not to use chemicals,I think commerial cleaners discolour grout.PS I am a cleaning nut plus a no shoes policy. Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 8Nov 10, 2010 3:37 pm I know it'd be quite difficult, but we don't wear shoes in the house , typical Asians, not planning on letting anyone with shoes on, again, typical Asian... and hoping my doggy will learn to wear his own sleepers in the house, that'd help I hope. Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 9Nov 10, 2010 3:41 pm That is not 'typical Asian'....I too have a no shoe policy (sadly my OCD has a lot to do with that). I have porcelain tiles and honestly you can see every little speck. I can understand wanting to have that cute furry friend inside though. Confused Renovator Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 10Nov 10, 2010 4:52 pm Hi DamNita. Yes I'd love to keep him inside as much as possible but he does get dirty...so quick and easy especially when it rains...man he's not coming in for sure. Try to think of ways to avoid getting the grout dirty but I guess there is not much I can do Just need to live with it and get them cleaned on regular basis... Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 11Nov 10, 2010 5:41 pm What a beautiful puppy! I have 2 dogs, out during the day when I'm at work and in during the evening. At the moment we have slate tiles (which I dont love) but next year when we move into our new home, I will have the same dilemma. You can try darker grout than the tile so dirt is not so noticabe. Not too dark that it looks odd, but just a few shades. Also put a mat outside the door so your dog can stand on it a little before coming inside. I used to have a Border Collie that I taught to wipe his feet on the mat outside befor he came in. ... he only did it while I was watching though __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ All new built homes look like display homes... until the furniture goes in. Re: Those who got pet with porcelain tiles..*Bonus pup picci 12Nov 10, 2010 5:57 pm Thanks for the compliment Starz. Yep it's a dilemma and we could have gone for timber floor but I think I would have asked the same question to myself...wouldn't he scratch and damage the timber..so either way we can't really win. haha but I couldn't give up beautiful porcelain tile look......it's so sh-mick! I'll train him to wear the shoes in the house or he's staying in the laundry! https://form.jotform.com/240284569218058 Please spare a moment to fill out this survey form for a project.
