Browse Forums Outdoor Living 1 Sep 10, 2010 6:19 pm G'day, My fiancé and I are investigating putting in an outdoor deck which will be covered by a roof extension of the house (fully plastered, tiled etc). Meaning it will have minimal weather exposure. Albeit not "weather proof". The size of the area is approximately 6x4 meters and will need to be about a foot off the ground. The timber bi-parting doors that lead out to this area are a dark chocolate brown (or mission brown) and we would like the decking to also be as close to this colour as possible. We have done a bit of investigation and the main consensus was that to achieve this colour we would need to use Timber Paint rather than a stain. The stains we've seen appear to have a reddish tinge to all of them and this will just not work. A few questions: a) What are the pros and cons of painting decking rather than stain. b) Will treated pine suffice? We've been told it's not worth painting merbau (defeats the purpose of using such a nice timber). I've also heard good and bad stories about treated pine - no idea what to believe!! c) On average, what price difference can you expect for treated pine vs merbau? I've heard it is significant but I received a quote for both treated pine and merbau and there was only like a $500 difference. I'm yet to get it itemized but would be interested in your thoughts. Thanks in advance and apologies for the lengthy post. Just needed to get it all in there Re: Decking - Paint vs Stain 2Sep 11, 2010 4:06 am You can get a product called timbershades http://www.cabots.com.au/exterior/timber_ext_stains.asp it comes in a range of colours and I have used the Jarrah and Chocolate brown to colour my treated pine to sort of match my newly installed Merbau decking seat The way this works is to penetrate the surface as it is a stain so the colour is in the timber fibres Painting is a coating so it coats the surface it may penetrate a little but it will wear away according to the traffic that walks over it more so than a stain http://www.cabots.com.au/pdfs/colour_ca ... colour.pdf this a specific paint developed for timber My preference is the stain as even though it will wear a little less than the paint but can I ask WHY MISSION BROWN????? just get the Merbau and coat it with some Sikkens HLS http://www.tenaru.com.au/ as this is by far the best system I went outside once. The graphics were alright, but the gameplay sucked! Settlement:22nd June Slab:27th August Frame:16th Sept Bricked:21st Oct Roof:24th Nov Linings HANDOVER23rd March! Re: Decking - Paint vs Stain 3Sep 11, 2010 12:15 pm Thanks for you reply. Although I think I still have a few unanswered questions. The colour I'm after is more a chocolate brown or dark walnut than mission. But, why not this colour? This sort of look provides a modern edge and in my opinion looks fantastic. I've seen many examples of this. E.g. http://www.charlotterowe.com/black_and_tan_garden.htm How do I achieve this and which timber and product? Re: Decking - Paint vs Stain 4Sep 11, 2010 10:45 pm Mission Brown screams the 60-70s The look you are after is more like a Black rather than mission brown IMO maybe you should get some samples of Mebau and paint with the Sikkens HLS in Ebony as it should get the result you are after it possibly could be done with treated pine but would mean custom mixing of colours, Merbau is a better fit I went outside once. Re: Decking - Paint vs Stain 6Sep 12, 2010 11:15 pm If you go the Sikkens it depends on the wear No matter what you use you will always need to maintain it but how long is a piece of string??? its not black and white unfortunately I went outside once.
