Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 23Aug 05, 2010 1:27 pm I have 2740 ceilings and 2340 doors and sliding robes throughout. I know the difference between 2590 and 2740 may not seem like much on paper but in reality it is a huge improvement. I would not get 2740 ceilings though unless you also raise the doors as the house seems out of all proportion otherwise (I would just shudder when I saw display homes with high ceilings and small doors out of line with bulkheads etc). Personally I struggled to tell the difference between the 2440 and 2590 ceiling height in display homes so if the budget is tight perhaps you would get better value spending that money elsewhere in the house? I agree with others though that it is best to select upgrades which can’t be changed later on... Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 24Aug 05, 2010 1:41 pm MickeyD I would just shudder when I saw display homes with high ceilings and small doors out of line with bulkheads etc shuddering is an extreme reaction!! I hope no one shudders when they enter my high-ceilinged, standard doors home!! (we got charged 10k) I think it gives that open feeling Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 26Aug 05, 2010 1:58 pm Getting a bit away from the original topic (and onto another well worn path, hey, donuts ) we have standard doors and window heights with 2700 high ceilings; our old house built in the 1950's with 9 ft ceilings was also like this and so are many other old and new houses that I have seen. By all means, upgrade to higher doors and windows as well if that is your preference, but house will still look perfectly normal if you do not. Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 27Aug 05, 2010 2:05 pm thank you helyn i knew you would find your way here, you will always be welcome at my high-ceilinged standard doored house "Your emotions are the slaves to your thoughts, and you are the slave to your emotions." — Elizabeth Gilbert Living in our new house. Currently scaping the land. Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 28Aug 05, 2010 2:20 pm Hmmm... sorry for being so insensitive. Yes donuts, you’re right- shuddering is extreme and not what I experienced which was more of a loud sigh and a comment about it being such a shame that a pretty house would not have bulkheads level with doors. I’m sure your house is so beautiful though that I would not even notice that as my focus would be elsewhere!
I guess it all comes down to personal tastes... one person feeling more strongly than another about a particular thing and vice versa in respect of something else. I have to be honest though- I didn’t think about raising the doors either until my partner pointed it out at which point it became a huge issue to me! I think more often than not, people don’t raise doors because they don’t think to do so and not necessarily by choice?? Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 29Aug 05, 2010 2:27 pm yes you're right mickeyd, about it not being something you think of, and I wasn't hugely offended, just having a bit of fun and I knew helyn would come along too with her $0.02! In all honesty if I had thought of it I definitely would have done it, and will do so in the next home. I know ppl dont look at it when they visit (but just might be watching for the slight involuntary spasm of their shoulders next time ) and it doesn't bother me anymore. it's all good edit - I only have one bulkhead and its the same height as my doors anyway. so thankfully no shudders to be had there! Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 30Aug 05, 2010 2:31 pm We have the high doors as well, and if budget allows, it's something I'd definitely recommend. There's been times when I'm moving furniture etc when the extra height through the doorway has been a god send. But the best part about high cupboard and wardrobe doors is that you can easily access all that extra storage space that the high ceiling is giving you. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Terrence Malick Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 32Aug 05, 2010 3:08 pm I'm having 3m ceilings (up to 3.3 with coffers) and standard doors. Shudder
Higherdestiny - I found that coffers were a much more economical way of raising the height than going an extra foot overall. I've got them in my hallway and living area and main bedroom. Cost about $1000 I think for the three of them - compared with $7,000 to go from 3 to 3.3m overall. Also helps define the living area from dining/kitchen. Just a thought... Edit - sorry higherdestiny - had a dyslexic moment with your name- thought you were planning to build in a high density area Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 33Aug 05, 2010 3:09 pm sounds lovely stegosaurus can I ask why you chose not to upgrade your door height as well? Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 34Aug 05, 2010 3:25 pm Thanks donuts Hmmm why did I not increase door height.... I guess I didn't really think about it. I've grown up in an old house with high ceilings and standard doors so it looks right to me. I don't dislike higher doors - I think its a good look in a really modern home - but I think the high ceiling/standard door combo will suit the strange medley (an underused word ) of old/new in my house. Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 35Aug 05, 2010 9:13 pm Yes, Im with you steg - we chose to leave doors/windows as standard after liveing in old house with 9 ft ceilings (modern 2700) and normal size doors and looked fine to us. That was our choice,; we didnt just overlook upsizing them. I dont dislike the upsized ones, can certainly suit a very modern house - which ours is not, it is in fact a very traditional style and I think the traditional combination of higher ceilings/standard doors suits it better. But we still have wardrobes and linen cupboards going to full height, so we're not missing out on storage space Re bulkheads, I dont think I have any - well, just the ones above the kitchen cupboards, is that what you mean?, and there is actually a high archway from hallway into kitchen/family area so that is at bulkhead height anyway. I hope Im not contradicting myself by saying that - this decorative archway is only higher doorway feature, photo below,(obviously from before we hung our pictures up ) as you can see our house is anything but ultra modern Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ I think Im waffling on now , past my 2c quota Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 38Aug 05, 2010 10:37 pm Lunchtime we went for the 2590 hight - couldnt see the value in another 11cm to upgrade to the 2700 *thats all it is* You'd be surprised at how much a difference it can make though I thought the same until we went with the higher ceilings in our last place and it made a huge difference to the openess. Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 39Aug 05, 2010 11:27 pm We have std doors - like the contrast really, so didnt really see the need for the larger doors. Only have three downstairs anyway as most is open plan. Re: Ceiling Height - Opinions? 40Aug 05, 2010 11:34 pm I've gone for 2700 high ceilings. I will also have some ceiling fans. If you'r having (or planning) ceiling fans, the 2700 is even more important. Demolition August 2009, Construction Started September 2009, Completed December 2010 ok thanks - yes was wondering if that should have been listed as Option Three! 2 7755 I'll look into different shower heads and ask the plumber about some engineering and see what he says. Thanks 2 9568 i imagine you also have another contract with an architect? and yeah, whatever other's said about special conditions and appendices 16 16026 |
