Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 01, 2010 6:36 pm i have to preface this little story with the fact that i am extremely happy with the choices we (okay mostly me) made for our house i got everything i wanted, the only thing i left out was a glass mirrored splashback in the kitchen, instead we opted for a ceramic tile thats white and rectangular, square like the rest of the place and it looks fine. I kept erring about the splashback - even to the end, got to the stage where i went over the tiles with the tiler and asked him to hang off becuase i was going to arrange for a mirrored splashback. This was only about 2 months ago, but the guilt about spending money got to me(always have - not much of a spender except for this house), but whats another 1k when youve entered into a new home contract, anyway i decided against, rationalising that we had already paid for the tiles and the kitchen would look fantastic anyway (my partner was not happy either and doing lots of frowning) the splashback got tiled and i huffed and puffed for a day and then it was fine, i even began to really like it today i went and looked at that effing display home builder who spends far too much on their displays, is OTT and first name starts with m i walked in and there was the offending item smack bang in my face - the mirrored glass splashback *noooooooo* moral of the story - if your house is under construction and youve made your choices..stop looking - unless you can handle it Re: tip on how to avoid house envy 2Aug 01, 2010 6:44 pm mav999 moral of the story - if your house is under construction and youve made your choices..stop looking - unless you can handle it My words also…… I’m sure your home will be stunning, be happy with what you have. We are still to choose a light over our kitchen island bench and DH suggested we should go re-visit the display homes to get some ideas on a feature light. I said to DH I'm not stepping one foot in those display homes as I will constantly be saying "oh, we should have got that" and "ohhhhh, that colour looks nicer than what we chose" and "why didn't we do something like that". I guess at the end of the day you can always tell yourself that you made the best decision at the time. I'm sure your kitchen is lurvely - can we have a pic? Excellent, we're having glass this build and I hate being a sheep and doing what everyone else is so that suits me perfectly! Re: tip on how to avoid house envy 8Aug 01, 2010 8:45 pm Might I say that I have also decided to stop looking at any kind of house magazine on the same principle. We aren't yet at the end of the build, but I am already making a list of what to do differently next time (!). Looking at other people's super-styled pretend-perfect houses just isn't helping my stress levels one bit. e. Re: tip on how to avoid house envy 9Aug 02, 2010 10:24 am Tell me about it! I'm not building, and have no intention of building any time soon (unless my OH caves and decides to let me buy the 100 acres of land for an obscene price wayyy out country way), and yet I'm still horribly jealous of everyone who is buildling, and all the choices they've made. I think I want about three different people's kitchens! Re: tip on how to avoid house envy 10Aug 02, 2010 8:31 pm hahahaha Love it! You are definitely right though! We went for a last walk thru of the display we had chosed & thought we would just have a quick look in the house next door - lucky it was with the same builder because we loved it instantly! Put us back a couple of months (4mths wasted modifying the original choice) but now we are less than 2 weeks away from having our perfect home!
