Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13364May 13, 2016 6:18 pm I'm hoping you all can help me, I'm trying to find out at what stage of the build we will need to do our retaining walls. Has anyone had to do retaining walls during their build and if so at what stage?? Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13365May 15, 2016 6:15 pm Has anyone built using Chiffon brick from the urban one range? If so could you please send/post a pic of your house. What other rooms did you find they classed as a room or didnt class as a room. Thanks everyone. Cheers, Mel from my experience they normally only class the bedrooms with wardrobes as a room, so if you have a four bedroom home that usually means four rooms have a built in wardrobe and any other rooms without wardrobes would be classed as an office or study. Pretty sure mine came with a light and power point. I added another light and another powerpoint (on opposite walls so I can add more later). I think the NBN box might be there? so there is a power point for that too... i could be wrong. And there is also one to function the garage door too (pretty sure that was included as a single power point). This included WIL, WIR and garage as rooms. The hallway through my house also has a square set architrave feature (i think that's what it is called) - so the hallway had 2 lights included. And everywhere that had a batten included *except* the hallway had a double powerpoint included. Cheers, Mel Hi Mel Yes the garage comes with a batten light and a std double power point (we have 2 lights in our garage FOC as they put one over the stairs). We marked out our plans as to what we wanted then culled down at electrical with the things that we could do after handover. Electrical apt was surprisingly not as bad as we thought it would be we added things that we had planned to do after as it was easier and price comparative for MJH to do. Goodluck Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13373May 17, 2016 10:50 am Thanks heaps everyone, appreciate your advice. I was hoping that would be the case that we got pp & light in the Garage. Staubs, that is what we are currently doing before the appointment, but i wasnt sure if i had to add those to the plans as a cost or FOC. I think we are going to just have battens throughout & have MJH put in some pendants over the island bench as they seem price comparative. Cheers, Mel We did standard bayonet fittings to all bed rooms but had them brace for a fan to be installed later. We also did std in media, bathrooms, linens, hallways, alfresco. We had them do the down lights to the lounge/kitchen/dining area so that room was 99% complete at handover. I didn't like any of the pendant lights they offered so we had them do wiring and will buy and fit after handover. Our electrical plan is on our blog if you want to have a look. Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13375May 17, 2016 12:55 pm After what feels like an eternity (18 months) our bank have just sent through the commencement letter to MJH!!! Only issue now is our CLO is on annual leave for 2 week with someone else monitoring her inbox. Hope the person backing up our CLO put us on the construction list ASAP. How soon after receiving the commencement letter will MJH inform us about the official start date? I didn't like any of the pendant lights they offered so we had them do wiring and will buy and fit after handover. Our electrical plan is on our blog if you want to have a look. We did similar to you guys and also thought that the electrical appointment was more reasonable than what we were expecting. We put down lights everywhere in the house except for the garage, bedrooms and main bathroom. We also had them do the wiring for the ceiling fans to 2 of the bedrooms. I rang a couple of electricians before the appointment and the price they were going to charge for each down light was only slightly cheaper than McDonald Jones. At the time of our electrical appointment the down lights were only $95.00 each (bit extra for the dimmers). We decided to get all the down lights through McDonald Jones instead of having an electrician come in later and probably mark all our ceilings for only a very small saving. If getting down lights, just be aware they are very bright and you might not need as many as you think. We definitely went overboard on the down lights and could have got away with it for much cheaper but we put dimmers on nearly all of them so we can dim them right down. Our alfresco area is 9 metres x 4.5 metres and we got 8 down lights, probably could have nearly gotten away with only 4. We got 3 on our front porch and probably only needed 1. Same in other areas of the house. Just a thought if people are trying to cut costs. If we had the whole house lit up at once without dimming them down you would probably be able to see us from space. We chose not to get downlights with MJH at all as $90 per light is way more than we can get them ourselves, plus we have a good friend who is an electrician. So we opted for the single standard batton in each room and will be installing downlights and a couple of fans shortly. We also didn't pay MJH for any extra powerpoints and will have our electrician do these for us too. Re: McDonald Jones Homes - The new thread 13378May 19, 2016 11:56 am Hi all, we are newbies to this forum and we are about to do our electrics next week, so we are very interested in the current topic. We have read various posts ranging from having all of the downlights installed by MJH (extremely costly) to going with the standard bayonet fittings and then having an electrician install them later. My question relates to whether or not it would be easier and more cost effective to have an electrician run cables off the bayonet fittings where we want downlights, or have the pre-wiring done for each downlight at a cost of $55 per light? If it is pre-wired, do they just leave the cable hanging out of a hole in the ceiling or is it still located in the roof? Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. A special Thank You to Staubs for their extremely helpful blog on their electrical plans - we are building the Milano Four 16.
